Default I Shoulda Knowed Better

They say ignorance is bliss, and I think that's true. I checked my tensioners a couple of months ago, and they weren't great but they weren't trashed. I figured on saving up for a Herko kit and Andrews 21's and stickin em in in a few more thousand. 1500 after that eyeball I did the 35k, and saved the oil filter. I bought an aviation grade oil filter can opener, and examined my filter in detail. Bad Idea. Notice the CAPS. It is chock full of tiny little orange chunks. Which of course means I'm not gonna get my couple of thou out of it. So my newfound knowledge has led me to parking my ride until I get the rest saved up for the upgrade kit. Since I am nursing my really beat up old dog along, I don't ride as much as usual, as I have to take him almost everywhere. So it is not as bad as it could be. But I recommend getting one of those filter cutters. It is alot easier than pulling the cam cover every service, and in this case saved me quite a bit in parts and damage. Maybe John will front me the rest of the parts?

Where did you get the filter cutter? Sound like it might be a good idea even during routine maintenance.

Any pics? I cannot imaging pulling the cam cover every service. Yikes!

I unthinkingly trashed the filter, but tomorrow I will look up the tool's origin and post where I got it. Not sure I could have gotten good pics of the pieces, would need a macro lens to focus properly, I think. But the tool works very well, Manufacturer tomorrow.

I don't understand investing in a tool to inspect the filter looking for worn parts that you already know will need to be replaced. Why not just invest the tool money into the replacement shoes and be done worrying?

I do understand that money may be tight for the full repair, but it is cheaper than replacing all of the other items that could also go to crap at the same time.

First of all, a man can never have enough tools. Opening a filter is a great way to spot a problem before it goes terminal.

or would you rather open the cam chest every 3000 miles?

Here is the one I have, I cut my race car filters open every 25 passes. A great tool.
