Post Troubleshooting Harley comm system....

Howdy all..

Need some help in troubleshooting the comm system on my '07 Ultra.

I already know it's wildly overpriced, the speakers suck, and it is what the MoCo has to offer...But, having served it's purpose for a couple years, I'm not as disappointed as I once was.
I do not have the cash to buy a new comm set from any mfg, so repair is in fact, the order of the day.

Here's the symptoms-
  • Wife's comm set has zero discernible output at the speakers- she cannot hear music, comms, or CB - nothing. - verified that volume is all the way up -
  • Wife's comm will not open the channel on VOX - However, if I open the channel via VOX, when she responds, I can hear her, but she cannot hear me. - Have NOT tried PTT from her end..(actually just thought of that while typing
  • My comm set works as designed from the front plug. (yes, the speakers suck, but they do work) - Have not tried VOX from the rear plug using my helmet.

Her's the work so far--
  • Swapped cables from her helmet to mine- No change
  • Swapped her helmet to my plug in the front - still inop
  • Plugged MY helmet into the rear plug, with each cable to verify speaker operation - passed.
  • Swapped speakers in her helmet w/ 8ohm 1-1/2" replacements from Radio Shack -- Still inop
.

Having swapped everything that I can think of from the front to the rear and vice versa, I believe that the problem lies in the connections at HER helmet.

Does anyone have:
  • A solid knowledge of how to pin test, disassemble, or otherwise trouble shoot the signals and connections ??
  • Mayhaps a wiring diagram ??
  • Any other ideas??

I am not afraid to jump right in with wiring and electrical, and I can easily handle the work involved, but just have pretty much zero knowledge of how the harley comms work...

Thanks in advance !!

Cujo

Mr. Cujo,
It sounds like you've narrowed it down to the headsets. Sorry I can't help you with the wireing and pin situation, but If you have the bucks, I would consider the J&M high output headsets. I have these and they are awsome. I can plug another helmet in with the HD headset with the same volume settings and it isn't even close to the J&M. There are some threads on here where some guys built their own head sets. They may can help you on the pin situation. Good luck.
