Default 2K Road Trip Prep...suggestions?

Hello All,

I am a new member although have viewed forum for a couple of years. Alot of great info shared I must say. Guess it was time for me to jump in and ask some of the experienced riders questions and offer my .02 from time to time. My question is this.......

About to take a 2K road trip to Phoenix and back on my 07 UC with wife. It has 14K miles. I bought it about 6 months ago with 12K on it and am not 100% sure of service record. Fluids look ok....just not sure. Thought about having the 15K service done prior and having all three holes changed vs. just oil. Good call? Any recommendations on brands or other things to consider on bike before heading out? We have done some 300-400 mile day trips and are very excited to hit the road on a long one!

Thanks in advance for feedback.......

I like to take a small air compressor and tire repair kit on long trips like your describing. Just good insurance I guess. If you don't have the room, make sure you have phone numbers for your road side assistance. As far as travelling long distance, make sure you drink plenty of water or gatorade along the way. It will keep you riding longer. My wife and I made a 3500 mile trip out to Arizona a few years ago and had a great time. Lots of areas to ride out there. One that comes to mind is 89A that runs from Flagstaff down through Sedona and Jerome. I think you can go down to hwy 61 and into Pheonix from there. Lots of good advice on this site for traveling, you might want to dig a little bit and find some of it. Good luck and have a safe trip.

Have a great time! I live up here in Wyoming and won't see another road trip until end of April or 1st of May '11. I'd change the fluids if it was me just to be on the safe side. Most on here will advise a synthetic oil of some kind.If youre going to have the moco do it I'd bet they'll insist on moco products which are fine imo.I run Amsoil 20/50 in the engine,Mobile 75/90 syn. gear lube in the tranny and Harley Formula + in the primary. You'll get a 100 different opinions on this subject.I'dd check your brake pads and tires also.

It sounds like you are going to have a great trip. I just completed a 4,000 mile trip this summer and learned a couple of things worth mentioning. Take a few tools, something will be needed; Compressor, plug kit, and a quart of oil will keep a few of the gremlins away. I would definitely complete the 15K service and then put 500 miles on the bike just to make sure nothing is amiss. Ride safe; stop often; enjoy...

Definitely do the service. I carry a pretty comprehensive tool set, as well as a tire plug kit and a small compressor. Go over your bike completely before you leave and you'll be fine.

Make sure the tires have plenty of tread to complete the trip. Change the fluids, go over the critical fasteners, enjoy your trip (plus take the items already mentioned in this thread).

One last thing, pack an old school paper map on the bike as a back up to any navigation units you may take. I learned this lesson the hard way, electronics can and do fail at the worst possible time.

On a trip that long I would plan on a stop at a dealer for fluids and possibly a full service. Likely a new tire too.

Bring an extra set of keys.
