Hey, guys. Not new to forums, just this one. Quick question, need some opinions:
I've been riding my '03 Sporty for almost 3 years now and I'm to the point that I'm ready to upgrade. I'm thinking of a lightly used Street Glide and need to know if there are any particular years that I need to avoid for whatever reason.
Not so much which years to avoid, but for the most part, the newer the better. At least until 09.
07 you got a 6 speed tranny and a 96" motor, hydralic cam chain tensioners.
08 Has a six gallon tank, Brembo brakes, IDS, TBW throttle.
09 Has the wider rear tire, new frame
10 and 11 have cats in the pipes.
This isn't an exhaustive list of the features of the different years, just what I recall off the top of my head. 06 was the first year of the street glide. 88" 5 speed.
Thanks for the input, Randy. It'll come down to what fits me better but I'm also considering the Road Glide. Anything to avoid on that one or is it the same newer is better rule?
From all I've read you want the 09 or newer touring for the new frame. I'm no expert, it's just what ive gotten out of this forum over the last few months.
The same features apply to all of the touring models.
Only thing that pertains to the road glide is they always have been and alwyas will be downright fugly!!!!!!
The last post isn't true. Really, the 08 and earlier models have a better ride then the 09's and later. I've got 40K on my 08 and have never had a wobble in it.
If they all cost the same, I probably would get an 09, but they don't all cost the same. I think the 09's are the sweet spot, but I wouldn't be afraid of an 08 or earlier.

The 2010 improves on the 2009 with a Helicut 5th gear in the tranny. Many compliants from the 09's on the straight cut 5th gear prompted Harley to correct the problem in the 2010. The 2010 Street Glide/Road Glide Custom also got rid of the 70"s style tail-light for a cleaner looking tail-end. The 2010 Street Glide and Road Glide Custom also get the 18" lower porfile front wheel/tire for a more "custom" look over previous years with 17" (09), and 16" on the 06-08 models. And yes, the 2010 has a 2 into 1 exhaust system... some people dig. On the other hand, almost everyone upgrades exhaust systems on these bikes, so the exhaust is usually the first peice to the scrap pile. The largest benefits comes with the 09 and newer chasis.
After 3 years on a Sporty, I think you will be stoked with any of the Street Glide/Road Glides though!!

All I know is the 10' street glide, and I have to tell you that I have not found anything to complain about with it. I wish I would have come off of sportbikes earlier!
