Honestly grade 5 would probably work.
Um, thats sarcasim. Im going to replace them with polished ss or chrome from Ace, whatever is cheaper.

I have a bench buffing wheel. ss polishes very nice.

I've reused my primary cover gasket 3 times without issue. Back when I was messing with the SOHB tensioner.

The SS resists rust better. Allen heads tend to hold water in the pocket.
I did several of their SS allens by putting them in a drill chuck (not too tight) and spinning them against some wadding polish. Very impressive results. The ruffer ones got spun against 1000 grit paper first.
Can't tell them apart from chrome. Even that slight yellow look seemed to go away. The few chrome ones I have don't seem to be holding up as good.

This only works for the lighter torque bolts, because they ain't all that hard.

$50 HF 8in bench buffer is one of the best investments I have made.

The chrome caliper screen inserts are $25 each. About 2 min on the buffer and mine look just as nice.

Glad you pointed that out - I'd never have realised. ss will work well. I'm no fan of chrome fasteners. Darned things rust out where the tool marks break the chroming (and that's hard to avoid).

I worked ina marine enviroment most of my life. SS is all I ever used.

There are usually 2 levels of ss quality.

304 (best) 410 (2nd best)

The 304 shines nicer and resistes rust better.

SS is not magnetic, one good way to tell if it is ss.
