Default METZELER for my 06 FLH

I need to replace the rear (for now) on my 06 Geezer Glide and want to move up to the METZELER but the tire size is confusing to me… I think the 140/90B16 will fit the rear… Has stock Dunlop MU85B16 on it now with a plug in it…

Any input fellas???

I run the ME 880 Metzler's on my '03 Road Glide:

Front: 130/90-16 M/C 67H

Rear: 140/90B-16 M/C 77H

Move up to metezler? The reason dunlop is used on harleys, is it was the only brand to pass the test to not run off the rim when flat.

No Tyme,

Don't hesitate to run the Metzelers. The stock Dunlops are terrible on freeway rain grooves - can make for a VERY interesting ride! The Metzelers are far superior in this respect, and will give you better tread life to boot. As for tires coming off of the rim when flat, don't worry about it (unless you're running spokes). Tubeless tires give you ample warning before they go flat. You'll know you have a problem long before the tire loses all of the air.

Well, not sure if your tire size question got fully answered. I've been running the ME 880's on my '05 RK for about 10,500 miles now. The local H-D dealer set me up with a 130 up front, and a 150 in the rear. He explained that the stock MU85 is = to about 143MM, and that a 150 should be fine on Baggers '04 and newer since they have the narrower belt. Sure enough the 150 fit and had over 1/8" clearance to the belt guard. He gave me a copy of the Metzeler brochure, and circled the suggested tire pressures, which are higher than for most tires supposedly due to the Rayon construction. Front 36-42 (solo-2up heavy) Rear 44-50 (solo-2up heavy). He told me to make sure I was @ 49-50 in the rear when traveling 2up and loaded with the Tour-Pak. Seemed like a lot of air, but OK I did as he said. After a few thousand miles and some unusual rear tire wear (and seeing the rear tire grow in width to where it had no clearance at the belt guard??) I dug a little deeper into the Metzeler brochure, and found that the 150* is listed(along with a few other sizes) as using 42 PSI max. What? So I'd been running the rear tire with way to much air all that time. I also found that the 140 is made for the higher pressures, has a 147 lb. higher load rating, and weighs 1.55 lbs more than the (larger) 150.
I had to replace the 150 @ 9700 miles, and have gone with the 140.
No Tyme, a 150 should fit your bike, (it does look good) but a 140 may be a better choice if you ride with a heavy load sometimes.
Anyone else have any experiance with the ME880 150/80B-16 rear tire?

I installed a 150x80 Metzelers on my 2000 Fatboy and now my 2004 Road Glide.
These bikes have the 1" final belts. No kits are needed.

The tires fit perfect and average 9k miles using 30 psi max (single rider).
I was only getting 6k miles with 34 psi.
I did not change the front until it was needed and the bike handled great.

The 150 Dunlop tire will rub the belt, when you back up your bike.
Metzeler has a lower profile, thus lowering your bike 1/4" .

Thats my 2 cents worth.

I installed two new Metzlers on my RK a few weeks ago. Check the Metzler web site, current replacement rear tire size is 150/80. My previous Metzler rear was a 140/90 which was the replacement size listed at that time and that was just put on in April. 150/80 fits my RK with plenty of clearance and I checked it carefully when I installed it back on the bike.

MU85 is 143mm so a 140-90 will fit fine. you won't get the mileage out of the Metz though. softer compund and 2/32 less thread depth than the MU85 Dunlop. i average 15K per year so tires are a common expense for me.

Neckball,

Are your tires the ME880's? I have an 06 RKC with 7200 miles and want to change out the Dunlops to Metzler. I ride 2 up a lot. I also have a lowering kit on the rear. I have done some research but it seems the right tire depends on the bike and ride.

Thanks.
