Default Cam Issues...

In the middle of a hydraulic upgrade, pulled the cams out tonight and found the inboard cam journals torn up pretty good. It is probably about .010 wear throught the nitride on about 75% of the inside journals on both cams. I was going to keep it stage one but had toyed around with the idea of throwing SE203 cams in it. What could casue the wear on the inner journals? The inner bearings seem to move freely with no detectable binding but the wear is evident. I can purchase the cams from a member here for a good price but then have the added expense of purchasing a tuner. What is the going rate for stock cams on an 88ci motor or is the 203 a good chaoice if I can pick up the cams ~100 dollars. If I have to replace the cams regardless would I be better off just throwing a set of Andrews 21s in it? It is an 05 road glide and I rarely shift over 4,000 rpm. Please help me make a good decision. My gut tells me to throw a set of stock cams back in it but on the other hand if I am replaceing them anyways should I upgrade????

While you're replacing cams,go bigger.You don't have anything against better performance,do you?

I'd throw SE 204's or 211's in there should be able to pick up a set for 100-150

If the inner bearing surface on those cams are worn it has to be slop in the bearings. I would not consider the job complete without replacing them.

I'd also check the runout on the crank.

As stated, any time you have the cams out, you have to replace those bearings. If your gonna go with new cams, Andrews 21's are a good choice, and need minimal tuning. A tuner I would suggest is http://www.techlusion.com/ It does a fine job with minimal fiddlin. Now, I am putting in Andrews 21's over Christmas. Herko is sending me my last parts this week. If you wanna stay stock, PM me. Once I get my stock ones out, if they are not damaged, you can have em.

Either the Andrews 21 or 26 would work well.

I love my Andrews 21s. That said, I have my stock cams if you are interested, but they are '06's and would perform even worse than yours, so I guess I'll keep using them for paperweights.

Here's a great article that I found to be true concerning the cams. Joe Minton is referring to the Andrew's 21's in this article about TC 88's.
