Thanks is all I need brother!! This forum has helped me on so many of my projects I'm just glad I can return the favor. Merry Christmas to you and yours!!
my turn.. havent been on the boards for some time .. 2009 SG i scratched the front fender and have a few chips in the fairing. I purchased the paint through HD.. RED HOT SUNGLO and SMOKEY GOLD. Its a 3 part job. Does anyone know how many coats of each is a good starting point so my painter doesn't waste 350 worth of paint? HD sells the paint, but no tech sheets. Theses guys have a good shop but they havent used HD paint so they are not familiar with it.At least not this particular combination. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I should mention that the name of the color is red hot sunglo.. the smokey gold gives it the shimmer i assume. Need to know how much to get close. thanks again
The only way to figure that out is to do a let down panel. If it's a tri-coat you need to spray the base coat to coverage then tape it off so you can apply the mid-coat pulling off a taped section with each additional coat of the mid-coat so you have 2,3,4 and 5 layers then compare them to the original finish. The only other thing you can do and you should still do the let down panel is to blend the color if you have room.
Not easy to explain a let down panel if your not familiar with painting terminology..much easier to show you.

Thanks. I figured they would have to do something like that. There really is no room to blend since the fairing and the front fender are that much surface area. These guys are good so im going to mention the let down panel and im sure they will get it right( fingers crosssed). I still dont get how HD can sell something they are not willing to tell you what process to use.. EFF HD!
Just curious, and i know there are variables, But i would assume i should have quite a bit of paint left out of 2 quarts?
if its a 3 stage as u stated the smokey gold would be the base color the first color applied followed by the sunglow which is the mid coat followed by the clear coat.
hope this helps.

a let down panel is a good thing if your butting up the color to a adjacent panel but your doing a fairing and a fender and a good painter can blend those panels. and not notice anything after the paint is done to get a good match u need natural light meaning (sun) i dont think your buddies will have any problems doing the paint if they are painters. good luck with your project.
