Default HD paint

Do they sell the HD color paint over the shelf? How would one go about getting a small quanity of the color matched paint.

I have a friend that can paint, and has all the equipment, all I have to do is supply the paint and beer and he'll spray it for me.

BTW, I have a set of fairing lowers on the way, it's why I'm asking.

You can buy the paint from a Harley dealer, but I believe the smallest amount you can buy is a quart and I think they only sell lacquer. I work for a PPG automotive paint distributor and PPG is the supplier to HD at the factory. PPG distributors have most of the HD formulas, unless it is a 2011 color in which case HD will not allow PPG to sell that color for one year. So, we can sell any 2010 color or older, and any 2011 color as long as it was not a new offering in 2011. For customers looking for touch up paint, we will mix as little as 5 ounces, providing the formula can be broken down that far, in most cases it can be. We also fill aerosol cans, so you could spray your lowers yourself, followed by a clearcoat. PPG only offers HD paint in urethane or waterbase so your durability is much better than lacquer. The only problem would be if your color is only available in waterborne. Most PPG distributors do not sell waterborne across the counter due to the somewhat special equipment needed to spray it. In that case, you could have a body shop possibly mix it for you.

Good Luck - Joechief

That's awesome information. To be honest, I'm not that much of a perfectionist, so I wouldn't mind using a spray bomb and doing myself. I guess I will call around to some paint shops and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the info.

Try www.colorite.com. You can buy touch-up pen, Touch up jar, Aerosol can,1/2 pint, Pint, and Quarts. They match Harley-Davidson bike colors.

Very useful information, do you know the code for 2010 Flame Blue Pearl.

One thing that confuses me about your response is you say that HD only supplies Lacquer which PPG doesn't offer. How come there is a difference if PPG are supplying the factory?

Thanks again for this info

Jharanin is correct. The PPG number is indeed #921100 for Flame Blue. The good news is that it is a base coat clear coat or 2-stage paint and not a tri-coat or 3-stage. Easier to spray and less money. The bad news is that as Jharanin says that it uses a limited use toner, VM4207 and the cost for a pint, refinisher price is $145.50. As I said before, we would mix 5 ounces for around $50.00. Keep in mind that this color is available in Deltron DBC or Global BC basecoat solvent urethanes, so when mixed with solvent, (both are mixed 1 to 1) your yield would be 10 ounces of sprayable material. I can only speak for my company, so check with your local PPG distributor to see if they would mix you a smaller quantity, some will, others will not. If you let me know where you live, I can check our PPG distributor locator and put you in contact with one of them.

As far as HD only offering lacquer over the counter. I know that for years that was all you could purchase from them. That may have changed in recent years since I have not had to purchase any paint from a dealer recently. Why did/does HD offer only lacquer? Hard to say, maybe profit margin, shipping, safety I honestly can't say. I do know that the factory is very funny about the paint thing. That's why new colors have a one year proprietary time limit in which PPG cannot sell that color. That was the case with the 105th anniversary bronze color that was only available from HD. Eventually PPG distributors were able to sell it. Even though they used PPG at the factory it was always a big secret. We as distributors were not supposed to talk about it due to HD wanting it that way and we wanted to use it as a marketing tool against our competition, escpecially back a few years ago in HD's heyday. We always had Dupont and Jeff Gordon rammed down our throats and we wanted to say, look, PPG is O.E. on Harley's. Anyway, HD has lightened up about this and now they are allowing PPG to display the HD bar and shield logo along with the other brands logos, i.e; GM, Ford, etc. that the supply at the factory. Sorry that was such a long story, just sitting around bored at work.

Tried to buy a pint from PPG and the cost was 114.00 for a pint, decided to wait the 3 days and have dealer order me the quart for 116.00 minus the usual 10%. At least I have extra in case I need it.
