08 FLHT 70,000 miles. Stopped for gas yesterday and when I started back up it was idleing around three grand. I have NEVER used the kill switch. Had to turn the grip past the stop to get to idle down where I could get to my destination. Meet a guy there who told me about starting it up and killing it with the kill switch waiting ten seconds and turning off ing. switch and reapeing it 5 times. After doing that everything is back to normal. I knew that hitting the kill switch with high RPMs would cause a high idle, But before I reset It yesterday the kill switch had never been used. Anyone had this happen?
If I understood him correctly, it had something to do with not being at zero throttle position when turning it off. Confused the computer into thinking that zero throt position was higher because of where he shut it off at. Does that sound right?
Either way, he had to reset his 2 or 3 times until he trained himself to have the throt all the way closed before shutting his bike off. No more problems since then.
there is a thread in here about idol issues with 07 and 08, sounds like yours was the tbw.but it could be iac, idol air controler, they get gummed up and stick sometimes, and with the non excistant heat issuie we have the loctite can melt off the throttle position screw, and cause all kinds of wierd stuff.dont touch that idol screw unless its hooked up to harleys digital technition.
I understand the shutting off at high idle. This was not the case. I never have used the kill switch and when I shut it off at the gas station it was ideling normanaly

Partially correct, but I'm surprised it actually worked.
Not bothering with the kill switch (I've always left mine "ON" also), turn the ignition switch to "ON" long enough for the radio to kick in. Turn "OFF" long enough for the lights to blink (or count to ten for both). Do that four times and your ignition is rebooted.
I try to remember to take my right hand off the throttle then turn off the ignition switch with my left hand. Haven't had a high idle problem since I starting doing that. Don't know why but I've never used the kill switch on any bike I've ever had.

THEN start it and you're golden.
Thanks, that would have been a lot simpler. I'll know what to do if it happens again. Damn I like this forum.
