Well just back from teh dealer checking out unrelated problem, he takes the bike for a test ride, comes back and tells me the front berings are shot and need replacing again. This is third time in 40 k miles, first time I am paying as warranty just expired. I will be doing another long ride this summer coming up.
What is the best alternative bering for the front wheel on the 09 Ultra?
I cant chance a bering going out on me, what can be done?
My guess is if they are bad they are being damaged during install. The tooling I have will stress the bearing if the plate is not turned around to finish pressing the RH bearing against the spacer

i would check the axle and the area in the hub or rim where the bearing rides at .they don't just go bad at that rate for no reason.

It has been repaired twice before under warranty? I'd demand they fix it under warranty again. If they don't agree, you talk to the service and sales managers together about Florida lemon laws.
"Florida Lemon Laws and the federal Lemon Law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) provide for compensation to Florida consumers of defective automobiles and trucks and other vehicles and products including motorcycles, RV’s, boats, computers and other consumer appliances and products. To qualify under the Florida Lemon Law or the federal Lemon Law, you must generally have a product that suffered multiple repair attempts under the manufacturer’s factory warranty. Lemon Law compensation can include a refund, replacement or cash compensation."
I am just looking for a solution to this issue, very happy with the rest of the bike and I have a lot into it to give it up for a wheel bering.
New type of bering machining hub etc etc. I read a few other threads and the service manager told me they see a lot of 09 bering problems in teh FL segment only.
I would think it might be something other than that bearing. Goes bad once, bad bearing. Goes bad twice, something causing the bearing to go bad. 3 times I am thinking I would be looking at the axle or the wheel itself and see if it is the culprit. How much weight on that wheel after a mount and balance? Something isn't right and I would be dammed if this would be the 3rd time it has happened and I would be paying a penny.
I understand your argument against wanting to push a "lemon law" claim but...
Something is wrong here and you should not be willing to take the hit.
The good news is that modern bearings are that good and that well understood that a true bearing expert could analyse the old bearing failure and give you a very accurate diagnosis. Simply changing bearing manufacturer is sticking a plaster over the problem, you are much better off pushing for the root cause of the failure.
Just the smallest misalignment or imbalance will cause premature failure irrespective of who makes the bearing.
If they will not warantee the problem take the axle and bearing out, soak them clean and inspect. There should be tell tale signs on the wearing surfaces. I can't believe they think this is normal and won't address the root of the fauilure. Does the dealership have mechanics or parts replacers ?
Just my opinion. This should not be happening. It would be nice to think this would be a free fix but I would have little faith in you mechanics even if it was. Obvious you were not aware of a problem as most would not be if the bearings were not really rough. If the bearings are really bad, if it was me and I could not do it my self I would either discuss it with a Harley rep or bite the bullet and replace the wheel as a complete unit if the bearing are really bad. I personally think the people you are dealing with are a bunch of crooks picking your pocket. If I had to go the whole wheel I sure would not do it with them.
1. Is this the same dealer for all three bearings?
2. Were any of the three replaced because YOU noticed a problem - vibration, noise, etc?
I only ask because some shops have a trend in suggesting certain repairs whether they are needed or not. I agree that 3 bearing failures in anyone's lifetime is a bit much, and in 40k should be unheard of. Unless you're a curb jumper, the dealer has either not fixed the underlying cause or he's running a screw job on you.
