This is true.
I had some parts done on a custom chopper several years ago.
The black fades.
More costly, too.

The reason it costs more...the black tries to "run away" from the part in the dipping tank.

you have to get it clear coated after, It is very soft and will change color and actually rub thru when cleaning it, I used two different guys, both suggested I clear coat it (it dulls the look of the finish) and I declined, all pieces went bad, quickly. Looked real cool at first, but in the end, had to go another route, good luck on you decision

After hearing (reading) the part about being SOFT and easily dulling, I did some searching, and found out there is a "Black Chrome" powder coating available. . . . and in a few shades too.

Here is the link for those interested:

http://www.nicindustries.com/

from there click "Prismatic Powders" then "Color Charts", then "Top Coats" then "Black/silver/white top coats" I tried to link straight to it, kept going to the "check out" counter. ?

Black chrome has been around a long time. I had a 1911 black chromed in 1969 and it looked great and held up. Thought about a black chrome S&S teardrop ac cover but never got around to it. The stuff does look sharp and this is the first I have heard about it fading or oxidizing.

Here are a few pictures of some SoftTail triple trees I am selling that I had Black Ti coated.
This coating is 3 times more scratch resistant than the chrome it is applied over.
This stuff really looks great in person and is supposed to be really durable.

Those look great, a little darker than I am thinking, but not too much so, might have to look into that too. . . .

Any more info on this Ti coating?

The black chrome is getting cheaper in price. Bikers here in the California are also anodizing parts red, blue and other colors. Ive seen anodized Paul Yaffe Monkey bars and Exhaust systems anodized. Black chrome looks good but wait till you see anodized parts.

Just came across this cool Black Chrome paint kit from Duplicolor, and I was wondering if anyone ever used this stuff on their exhaust pipes or heat shields.

Here is the video link http://www.duplicolor.com/projects/project/shadow/

It looks like it does a good job on chrome but I am real curious to see if anyone has tried it on parts that get hot! - post pics if you got em:-)

I contacted the manufacturer - Duplicolor - and I posted their reply below. This new product may provide some of us with another option when it comes to painting our exhaust/shield black. This stuff stays shiny and still looks like a deep black!! I think this might look cool on my XBones exhaust heat sheilds but don't want the stuff peeling off after the first ride. Anybody got any experience with this stuff?

Here is their reply...

Hello Pat,

Thank you for visiting the Dupli-Color website. We appreciate your taking the time to contact us.

Our Shadow Paint will hold up to 550 degrees F, so it will hold up.

Thank you again for your inquiry. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Sincerely,
Daniel

Anodizing has been around for a long time. Black chrome is not anodizing. I've had some black anodized parts, and in time they turned kinda purple. Remember the early Rhinehart end caps?
