Default TC88 or Evo? What do I have

Kind of new to Harleys and not really sure what i ended up with on my 99 FLHTCUI. I had one dealer tell me it is a TC88, and a different one tell me nah, its an early EVO. I want to do some upgrades this winter (cam, power comander, exhaust0 but not sure what i need to be shopping for. Any cluses or sugestions? I have been a greasy nut twister for 30+ years, just not that much on bikes. Love doing my own work and will only go to dealer for specialt tool work.

Thanks all, Happpy New year.

Were they looking at your bike when they were telling you this? You can tell at a glance the difference between the two. I'd bet you've got a twin cam. The twinkie was released in late 1998 for the 1999 model year. They are easy to see the difference visually. The evo rocker box is very boxy, they're affectionately called block heads. The twin cam motor has a distinctive chrome rocker cover, and the cooling fins on the jugs are bigger.

u also have to high spots on the cam cover where the cams sit. evo is like a old shovel cone motor which is the cam cover.

The way you can tell is where the pushrod lifter assemblies are the Evo is nearly touching each other and the Twin cam is about 2 inches apart.

I'm assuming it has the stock air cleaner cover on it? If it's round and says 80 cubic inches then it's an EVO, if it's oval and says 88 cubic inches then it's a Twin Cam.

boy oh boy..........IF IT IS A 1999 BAGGER IT IS 1ST YEAR TWIN CAM HOPEFULLY THE CAM BEARINGS WERE REPLACED CAUSE THEY HAD BIG PROBLEMS WITH 1999 AND EARLY 2000 MODELS can always go gear drive cams and not worry.easiest way for you to tell is evo rocker boxes were flat. twin cam rocker boxes are not flat and are raised in the middle....google can help you with pics to compare

Post pics and we can tell ya! It might be a late evo (can't possibly be an early one) first put on the road in 99, or a TC88. We are all speculating so far, so put us out of our misery!

If it's a 99 FLHTCUI, it is a twin cam88. Make sure that the cam bearings have been changed. If they have not done this, do it before you drive it very far. When you lose a cam bearing, you are faced with a very expensive motor rebuild. If the bearings have been replaced, you should have little or no problem. The problem came when Harley tested the new motor using one kind of bearing. When they went to production, some financial guy decided that they could save some money. The rest is history.
