Anyone running S&S super stock heads ?
I'm at stage one right now, and was thinking about doing
S&S heads and a set of Andrews' #37 gear driven cams.
Staying with 88" bore, and keeping compression at 10 or below.
Can't decide on porting stocK heads or going S&S.
All the shops in my area want to sell me in house porting, saying
that S&S aren't what they were in years past.
Not sure where the BS stops. LOL
A quality porter can make your stock heads as good or better than most (not all) aftermarket heads.
Exercise caution with the compression ratio with the 37's! If you exceed 9.7:1, you are all but gaurenteed to have pinging issues. Andrews will tell you not to go over 9.5:1. You may wanna give them a holler before you get too far into it. I built one with 37's @ 9.7:1 and it was a really strong (100/100) motor, ran great ~ even in a bagger. BUT..... without 93 octane fuel, even @ 9.7:1.... "ping city".
Perhaps your builder has some sorta "secrets", but many of us have been down this exact road and have had similar results.
You are better off using stock heads and having them ported with bigger valves installed. If you don't want the down time buy a set off e-bay and have them done.
Thanks for the heads up on the compression, and pinging issues.
I doubt that my builder knows any secrets, thats why I'd like to be
able to tell him exactly what I want done.
I'am probaly being **** about this, but I don't want any screw ups. ( LOL)
1. You can take your stock heads and spend a lot of labor money to open them up and put the bigger valves in them and make them more performance ready.
or....
2. You can buy a set of S&S heads and with a little bit of labor money, make them better than the stock heads ever thought about being and then really be happy.
You should talk to Van at the Dynojet tuning center in Nesbit, MS and see what he says. He has been dynotuning V-twins for 20 years and has been there and done that. The heads are key to making horsepower and making the motor bigger does not make it better. You can keep the 88 jugs and put the right cams in for the heads and fuel delivery system that you are using and make more horsepower gains that with bigger cubes.
I had my bike dynotuned in August, and I gained 6 hp and 5 ft lbs tq just by having the PCIII tweaked. My next upgrade is going to be heads and cams...after I talk to him.
