Default Question for those with heated grips

What kind of gloves do you wear to keep the wind off the top of your hand, and let the heat through the bottom? I mean at 40º I didn't need any gloves at all, but what about at 20º-30º?

My Pal has his Limited stored with me for the winter- I take it out every once in a while.

the heated grips do radiate heat into the hands, but the top/back of the hands do get cool--- it's almost like Venus, one side boiling, the other side frozen.

I've tried a few pairs of my gloves and the effect is the same.

I think heated gloves are a better answer ( and maybe 1/2 price?)

Mike

At 20 to 30 degrees you will need some heated gloves instead of heated grips. I like the heated grips on my Limited, but find them pretty much in effective below 40 degrees. You will need heavier gloves and the heat from the grips does not transfer thru like it does with the lighter gloves. Another factor to consider is how you ride. I like to let my hands drape across the grips and lever's leaving the grips exposed on the bottom. You have to keep them "enclosed" in your hands to feel the constant heat from them. If they "cool off" in the wind it will take a minute or two to get the warmth back in your hands. Heated grips in cool weather are great, they are not meant for out and out cold weather riding in my opinion.

Many winter riding gloves have more insulation on back than in palm. These would be better with heated grips. I kind of visulize hands getting cold is if only the top of your hand and fingertips is cold and palm toasty that your body can handle that and adjust easier than whole hand cold.

Realistically if temps are in the 20's heated grips alone will not be the answer unless you put some of those entire grip covers over the controls that you put your hands inside.

Heated gloves are the only way to effectively keep the back of your hands warm. My heated grips get so hot, I never go past 3 on the dial but I still use my heated gloves along with my heated jacket liner, pants and sock covers. I'm as warm as riding in my cage. By the way I ride my bike year around, and I don't live in Florida. Heated clothing is the way to go, been using mine for the last 4 years.

Yep, I agree with KevinMcC. I installed the heated grips on my 05 Ultra a few years ago. They're fine when it's not real cold, like 40 degrees, but when it get colder, say 20 degrees, the back of your hands get cold with gloves on. I'll usually wear mid-weight gloves, or if it's not too cold, mechanics glove work pretty good.

If I had to do it again, I would go with heated gloves.
