Just picked up the HD Road King leather tour pack cheap on ebay. Fits great looks great on the bike. Am thinking of adding a rack to the lid like the leather CVO pack has. Wondering if anyone has done this to theirs? Any problems w/ the strength of the lid or did you somehow beef it up. Not planning on using it for a lot of weight but a place to strap on our jackets if it get to warm maybe net the brain buckets when we don't need them.
I put one on my leather pack. It looks good and holds a lot of weight.
You have to put a smaller one than the king rack. I think it is the sidecar rack or the contoured rack.
Mine is a King rack but I can tell you it is worth it's handiness when it comes to long trips!! We put a collapsible duffel in the TP when we head out, end up filling the TP with goodies on the trip with the dirty laundry to sit on top in the duffel.
Thanks guys. Was at the dealer today and parts dept helped with iodeas for mounting. They have most of the racks in stock and will break them out so I can see what fits best. Racine Harley has some of the best people working for them more like friends to their customers than just sales people.
Actually I read somewhere on the site, this has been done. One thing I remembered is they put a stainless washer under the mounting posts on the top to ease the pressure on the leather top. Look around the site, I'm sure you will find it. KL
I'm guessing that the tour pack you have is constructed like the one I had on my old Heritage. The lid is made of plastic and will give with weight. I use to pack up my tour pack tight to the lid, jackets usually will fill it up. Then the lid will not give. We used to strap a T-Bag designed to be put on a luggage rack on the top of that tour pack and traveled from CT to Va., W. Va., Pa, and Maine without incident. Just have to watch how you pack. I've posted a picture of my old Heritage and if you look closely you can make out the luggage rack. It was a smaller one than what goes on the Ultra.
i ran the ultra rack on my leather pack for 3 years(then traded the king) no problems ,but...the hinge had me worried with heavy loads just used 2 hands .drilled right though the leather use a sharp bit and go slow just in case the leather trys to wrap around the bit, didnt in my case, and a little dab of silicon on the washers.
Ok Found a rack. Really liked the spacing on the mounting points. Just thought i would post some pics and try and describe what i did. The rack really fits the size of the leather tp 20x14 or so. Had to make my own template which was no big deal Used black silicone on all the washers inside and out. Added the inch and a half fender washers to thi inside. Figgered it would help spread the stress really don't see a problem. Have a bag ordered that fits the tp racks and there will be xtra space to lash down jackets and maybe a helmet or two with a net
Found the rack on Ebay here is the link to the offering don't know if it will show http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...4947&viewitem=
