i'm using the round nostalgia one on my 08 and i should have gotten mine powdercoated but i just used it in the cast aluminum color instead. i think the black wrinkle finish powdercoated ones through harley are 40 bucks. it'd not stick out so much if it were black. i'd avoid the gloss black though, and go with some sort of semi gloss or flat black if you were to spray it. you can find paint that's black wrinkle and it'd look very similar to your motor cases and cylinders.

i painted the Big Sucker plate on my 06 with high temp flat black...no issues...

i masked off the mating surfaces...

took it off b4 i traded in Nov...itll be 4 sale as soon as i get my list made up...

As far as these backing plates are concerned, what is the supposed advantage of silver, black, chrome, etc. if you use the oval shaped AC cover. It looks like almost none of the plate near the mounting cover shows. I can see that more of the backing plate would show using the round covers.

Painted mine flat black, regular paint. Took about 10 minutes including masking. Shall see if it should have been engine paint soon enough.

Black wrinkle paint is very forgiving, handles engine heat well and looks good.

+1 painted the SE backing plate on my '99 Dyna with wrinkle black Krylon back in 2000. Sold that bike in '07 but I see the new owner regularly and it's still going strong.
