on my 07, i painted the gray back plate with regular flat black paint. you know, the $.99 cent per can variety. held up great for 3 years until i traded the bike in. never had to touch it up either.
As far as these backing plates are concerned, what is the supposed advantage of silver, black, chrome, etc. if you use the oval shaped AC cover. It looks like almost none of the plate near the mounting cover shows. I can see that more of the backing plate would show using the round covers.
I am going with a different cover than the stock. Most likely a round cover. I used the black engine paint and it came out good. Now I have to find some chrome plugs to cover the oil breather bolts. They show black plugs below but I think Chrome would look better
I painted mine with VHT wrinkle finish paint. Put it in a 200 degree oven for awhile to bake it on (per instructions). Exact match to the black on the engine housing.
Why is it that the SE AC is only available in gray?Do they even have a gray motor now?I'm assuming there are more of these sold for black motors and some people buy the P&A black backing plate.I think I just answered my question.
I bought a wrinkle finish black back plate when I bought my K&N replacement filter, the plate came with vent inserts to direct the head gasses into the intake and cover the boltings.
