Default My First Fiberglass Project

I bought a really nice sprung solo rail seat for my '09 FLHRC and found I didn't like seeing all that was under the seat especially with the newer frame being wider starting at the front of the seat. I Looked at the "police" frame fairing but fit was poor not to mention the big hole in it for the air shock. So I decided to try this:

1) Using Shrink Wrap I snugged it to the frame using a small plumbers torch.
2) Continued to cover as much of the bike as needed. No heat just tape
3) Laid out fiberlass cloth and brushed on the resin. 3 layers of course and 2 layers of fine cloth
4) Release was easy and did a rough trim with a cut wheel (be careful)
5) Fine point marker and careful trimming using the side of the cut wheel like a grinder and fit it close to allow fitment of the side covers.
6) A little hand sanding with course then medium sandpaper and a coat of sandable primer.

The finished black cover will be matt or flat or krinkle type finish so the smoothness doesn't have to be perfect like for a glossy reflection.

Thanks !! This is an earlier pic...before fab of the frame fairing. I plan on a little more trimming; perhaps where the front corners roll over the frame. As it turns out they are not needed to hold it in place and I think they make the front look too square. Today I picked up some 3/4 wide by 1/4 thick adheasive foam tape for the underside that will compress and ride the frame. SC

7) Ok the flat black was to obvious...found a slightly textured "metalic look" paint but came out more silver speckle than black. Could not find matte black, thought maybe satin (trying to match the piece between seat and tank) then I saw semi-flat ? I've heard of semi-gloss but semi-flat ? hmmm. Just enough shine to show some imperfections in my sanding etc. It almost looks like leather and blends so well with the overall look. I like it.
You may also notice shims above the crash bar... they give the seat rail a little more clearance above the new hard bags.

You say this is your first fibreglass project, but have done a remarkably good job. Well done.
