Default Tour pak options

Im getting my New 2011 SG in April.. I rarely ride two up because wife dont like to ride.. I am planning some long trips this summer. I found a link on ebay http://www.ridebikegear.com/tp-extra...ack-p-196.html

The HD tour-Pak will set me back 1600$ with tax ordered from HD and adding a standard back rest wont give me the extral luggage space... should i go for the HD tour pak ? or take the cheap way out with the above tour pak... been searching for a used tour pak, but they seem to be hard to come about. Seems all i would need from HD is the Detachable two-up Tour pak mount and dont need to relocate the antenna with the cheapy version.
Ride Safe.

My brother has that exact set-up. Works for him. It is cheap & you get what you pay for. I wouldn't have it on my bike.

If you are doing the long trip solo, look at getting one of the large Tbag style bags ( I have the Tbag that is backpack sized, I large compartment and 5 exterior pockets, waterproof cover zips into it's own pocket.
I just ran a cable and padlock through it so it is safe for short stops for gas, food.

that would only be a couple of hundred dollars, and easy to store at the house in between trips.

or, start watching the classifieds now---I sometimes see tour paks as low as $600, maybe your colour will come up.

detachable rack is GREAT if your tour pak is on and off every few days, for tour pak use of a week or more a couple of times a year, you could get just the stock rack ( I have one for sale $50) and bolt it on/off, it takes minutes and you can do with 1 person, but 2 is better
PM if you want details.

I have the antenna relocation kit ( EG Classic) , and use a $7 rubber stubby from the auto parts store-it stays in place tour pak on or off

Go with the HD tour-Pak I got the detachable with my 2010 Street Glide and I love it, it almost never comes off the bike and I ride mostly single since wife has her own bike. To take it off and move the antenna back to it's stock postion takes at most 5 minutes. Just saying

Detach from Harley is the way to go. Call Brian at surdyke Harley, u will really like the prices he will give u vs. Paying what the book says. Think my pak set up on my glide ran me like 1200 shipped and painted. Pm me if u want more details.

Kury GranTour, is a nice bag..... outer pockets for odd and ends. And you put it on the passenger seat, and it gives you a really nice backrest for those long hauls.

I have an 07 SG and I bought a used tour pack and detach bracket. It took me about a year and a half to find the right color. I got mine at robsusedharleyparts.com. He threw in a seat for free (passenger backrest). Cost $500 for tourpack.

Some good advice from others. You could look into a backpack style pack which, when reversed can sit in your passenger position and act as a backrest for you. I use the SAC luggage products on my Road King.

I also have a Street Glide in which I have the detachable king tour-pak. It is great for longer trips to provide additional storage, I can place a SAC backpack style bag behind me for back support for the week plus travels as well as put a duffel on top of the tour-pak.

Like most things, its comes down to price versus use or possibly asthetics. As was mentioned, most dealers will reduce the price on the detachable tour-pak assembly when you purchase the new bike.

OP, that link shows a Mutazu tour pak at a grossly inflated price:

http://www.mutazu.com/products.php?c...ies&s=prod.php

I've had the Mutazu tp for 4 years and it's an excellent value. You can do a search here using that name or VIP and find many threads and many favorable comments. It's construction is similar to that used on the HD Road King tour paks that open forward without the vinyl cover; i.e. it's moderately flexible and not intended for carrying significant weight on a luggage rack.

I also have an HD Ultra tour pak ('08 model). The Mutazu holds about 75-80% of the HD Ultra/King full size tour paks. The HD will also accept a larger luggage rack and support more weight than the Mutazu.

The Mutazu is mounted on an HD solo detachable rack; the Ultra tp mounted on a two-up detachable rack. The Mutazu sees more use since the bike only gets a tour pak when I'm running errand and need the extra storage, or on a trip.

Here are a couple of pics of the Mutazu and Ultra tp's on my bike:

Also, before I bought my current Ultra tour pak as part of my bike's repainting in early '09, I sold the Ultra tour pak I had that matched my bike's previous color. I sold it because I used it so little (the Mutazu was adequate for my needs including week long solo trips), I grew tired of seeing $800 or so sitting in the garage going unused, and used the $$$ from the sale for other bike items that would get regular use.

Good luck with your decision.

Carl
