Default Roll-Your-Own Fender Blank

I’m considering using this blank PN 88171 http://www.customchrome.net/icatalog/Full.aspx?Page=1163, to make my own fender, but I can’t find any reference to the thickness. I looked at the description from about everyone who sells it, and none of them make a claim of gauge or thickness. If anyone can tell me, with reasonable certainty, the thickness of this fender blank, I would surely appreciate it.

hey fabrik8r, thanks a lot man. i went into that site, and about three hours later i still can't answer that question. one of the fenders is listed as being made out of 12 gauge, and another is listed as being 18 gauge. i got lost in the site, and it's all your fault. now i'm laffin my butt off cause i'm so easily distracted. ahh, just what i needed, another place to spend money on hot rod and chrome stuff.

I called CC, and as I suspected, they had no additional details beyond the catalog description. However, the guy I talked to said they're "pretty thick". So in the interest of time I think I'll just go ahead and order it. I guess the guys who could possibly answer this are too busy in the shop actually making “custom” fenders to hang out on these forums. Oh well, I guess I’ll be the guy to post the answer when it comes in the mail.

Ok the Custom Chrome Roll-Your-Own 88171 6” front fender blank came in. It's about what I expected, made in Taiwan, poor rough finish, welded down the center, not rolled. Underside weld not ground down. Only .052 thick. Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining. It was only $108.00 delivered and it's not so jacked up I can't work it. The OEM is only .040 thick. Hopefully somebody else will find this info useful someday. I got this to make a front fender for my original 16” SG wheel, it is the tightest fitting blank that I could find, it should have about 3/4” clearance over the tire. I’ll follow up.

Taiwan, so it is not so. In the states, you would not of found a welder that would have welded your material for $108.

Still, looks like you should be able to work with it. Just needs a little massaging on the weld bead.

Default Update

Still working the fender but its coming along. It took more than a little massaging, I cut a block dolly on the lathe to fit the radius of the fender, been beatin on it a couple times a week when I get time, got it pretty close. I got it mocked up getting ready to weld the mount brackets on tomorrow, figured I'd show some progress. It looks pretty good, definately original.

For a 16" rim and tire that looks cool. Tight to the tire.

Just received the 7 1/4 inch wide, 13 3/8 radius 'round top' roll your own fender part# 88184.
Thinkness= .058" not bad rough finish except for the weld underside, who cares as long as it's not sharp... a min of grinding and done.

Here's my beef however: Mine is supposed to be the 'round top' version as opposed to the 'smooth side' version (#88172).
It was possibly a round top before they pieced a flat strip in between and welded it up. Now it's a rounded corner with a flat top fender. Looks good if that is what you want, but doesn't look like the picture in the catalog. I noticed on another site that they stated the picture might not be accuate.....WTF.

My local parts shop and I couldn't emagine how the non-round top version could be anymore flatter than my so called round top fender is.
Smooth side? As opposed to what, a wrinkeled side?
Who comes up with these discriptions, one might ask.
And while I'm at it.... The only reason I picked this piticular fender was because it was the ONLY one in a million catalogs that actually stated the freakin radius. But don't get me started..........

Fenders. I've been down that road. You found what most fret over...the thickness of oem vs aftermarket. The oem fenders have a lot of cheap steel in them...ANY fender that has a rolled design or step will be that way. Soft steel is way easier to stamp than hard steel. Welding is another issue. It can be done, however....small burns with a wire welder is the key. Two years ago we cut up a 09' rear fender and installed it on my 08' FLHX to install a 180 tire...damn thing looks better than factory.
