96 Ultra factory stock EFI, bought new, rode 60k miles, never had any problems. Was idling yesterday then stopped, turns over but won't start. Weak spark on front, no spark on back. Plugs are not wet. Compression good. Engine light on solid. How can I read the code without going to a dealer or buying the $2500 BDM?
From the thread, it appears that there is no way to check the codes on a 1996 EFI without a scanalyzer. I guess I pay the hour labor to have the code read at the dealer which I really hate to do...any other suggestion?
I purchased the HD diag.code light, HD-41197. One of the local stealers
would not sell it to my. Said it was a dealer ONLY item. RAT BASTARDS!
But the other stealer, sold me the one LED plug for $50.00, RAT BASTARDS!
DAWG most likely nailed it! But my problem was water intrusion into the ECM
after I had installed a power commander. I busted into it and dried it out
in the oven on VERY LOW heat. Good luck..............Tenn.Vol.
thx for your help. By shorting pins 1-RX receive data from ECM and 2-ground (in the DTC connector pin 1 is bottom left and pin 2 is top left looking at it with the connector lock on the bottom) and measuring across pin 3 (top right)-TX transmit data from ECM and pin 4 (bottom right)-12v from fuel pump relay I was able to pull codes. I unhooked the battery for an hour to purge any old codes and them hooked it back up to read the new codes. 11 and 12. I still do not know what the problem is, but am checking the voltages across each of the sensors to determine whether it's a sensor or wiring issue.
