For those of you have have been frustrated with Harley installation instructions (for anything) their technical writers have reached a new level of incompetence.
I've installed a NIM for a Road Tech zumo 660 on a 2009 Road Glide FLTR. The NIM is sold as a complete kit however it's not until you start and motor through the instructions that you're confronted with the first surprise. The FLTR is not equipped with a 35 pin harness connector for the radio -- it is a 23 pin which requires the purchase of a separate connector kit (Part No. 69200033). It then states to use those installation instructions which are also incorrect. Both instructions tell you to separate connectors 6A and 6B. 6B is unused and taped to the 23 pin wiring harness from the factory. There is no 6A which is detailed as the audio interconnect harness in both instructions. Figure B-23 (wiring diagram for interconnect harness: 2009 FLTR) in the service manual clearly shows the six pin Deutsch connetor. Spots 1,2,3,6 are taken and 4 and 5 are blank. That's where the 2 jumpers wires (from harness kit 69200033) are attached and then plugged into pin hole 13 and 14 of the new 35 pin socket housing that you just purchased in part kit No. 69200033. Now you attach the 5 wires from the NIM harness into the 35 pin socket housing and the 6 pin Deutsch connector (6B) to the module and you should be good to go. Ultimately the wiring diagram in the service manual saved me because the installation instructions are crap... Anyone else have this frustrating experience??
Definitely have to agree - their tech writers leave something to be desired. Depending on the project - sometimes have to read the guidance 2-3 times while looking at part to ensure I got it down. Maybe they're banking on someone throwing 1st set of parts across room & having to buy another kit...
Dealer charged me 2 hours to install which was very fair. All total, I paid ~$1400.00 to have the 665 installed on my FLTRX. Having to use the AUX on front of the radio really pisses me off! Weather, Traffic and XM was quoted at $260 a year, that's not going to happen. Complete waste of my money this venture was.
SR, you're right about the connector 6 mistake in the instructions. Shoot HD a letter/email and perhaps they'll fix the mistake.
As for the "complete kit" remarks, HD states in the paper catalog at page 623 and on the website that the add-on harness is required:
Fits '06-later Touring models (except FLHXSE2) equipped with the Advanced Audio system and a Road Tech zumo 660 GPS Navigator P/N 92115-09 or Road Tech zumo 665 GPS Navigator P/N 76000014. '06-laterFLHX, FLTR, FLTRX, and FLHTC models and those not equipped with Wiring Harness P/N 70169-06 require the separate purchase of Connector Kit P/N 69200033. Does not fit with Advanced Audio Hands Free Cell Phone Kit P/N 76408-06.
Glad to hear you were able to overcome HD's poor instructions to successfully install the NIM with your Road Tech 660.

Send your radio off to Iron Cross Audio. They will add an AUX port to the back, something that HD should have done three years ago. It cost me $85, including return shipping. They shipped it out the same day they received it, hard to beat service like that. Here's a picture, very professional looking job.
I put the NIM on my 11 RG to hook up a 665 gps worst set of directions i ever got from harley. you have to wait til you get the bike opened up to see the 35 pin connector is missing. we were an hour looking for the 6A connector. we finally realized the 6A didn't exist and my directions said to take the 4 and 6 pin out of the 6B connector and then put the jumpers in the the 4 and 5 holes. got thru that. Like you said, the wiring diagram in my service manual saved me also. when I realized I didn't have the push to talk harness, i didn't have 6A and it was time to move on. but so far everyhting seems to be working, GPS voice, and xm is thru the radio with out using the Aux port. I have put a bunch of stuff from electronics to hydraulic clutches on a 03 RG and 05 Vrod and never had a set of diections that didn't do the job
I've installed a NIM with a Road Tech zumo 660 on my 09 Road Glide FLTR. I've seen several posts that state when connecting the 5 wires from the NIM wiring harness that #4 and #19 need to be switched. The instructions state red/blue wire terminal into cavity #4 and the tan/blue wire terminal into cavity 19. I've been reading that's incorrect and needs to be red/blue - into #19 and tan/blue - into #4. Any input, confirmation or rebuttal would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to know before I reattaching my fairing?? Thanks
