I mounted mine on the fairing where they are easy to see with takeing my eyes off the road. I made my own brackets from alum. angle and painted them flat black. you can see them in my sig.
You dont mention which GPS you have, but HD makes fairing mounts for the Zumo 550, which I have, and also the Zumo 660 and their HD versions. I love my fairing mount. Its mounted on the left side of the fairing, fits very neatly, and all the wires are totally run through the fairing and hidden. Its a very stable mount and I can see the unit perfectly. Take a look at Ram Mounts as well, although I believe their options are handle bar mounted. Great products though.
Bought this off of ebay cheap. Have used it for years and it has worked great.
I went that route for my Garmin 500 and it works great as I seldom use the GPS and it is small and unobtrusive. Word of warning... when I was riding down in SC after new years I hit a stretch of washboard pavement and it bounced off. The power cord was the only thing keeping it from a pavement roll. I'm rethinking my mount.
If you cared to mount it on the handlebars I found an awesome chrome mount that fits my 1 1/4" bars. Sorry, don't remember where I got them from but a Google should get you in the right direction. Sorry again but just have a Road King but it is an option and looks great!!! Originally bought it for a nuvi 755 but just got a zumo 660 and the mount and cable from my battery are a perfect fit!!!

Oh, an if you run a quick search on the forum for "GPS Mounts", or somehting similar and you'll see enough past discussions to keep you busy for hours.
I mounted mine on the right bar as that seemed the simplest place to fit it. What I didn't think of is my wife can also read it, so we can both navigate using it. We like to do things together! So if you carry your loved one and she can stay awake place it where she can see it as well.
