Default Tour Pak crack

I recently discovered a crack near the front left corner forward of the front hinge.

I am told by a Harley mechanic that this happens quite often. We travel and use a T-Bag on the rack on the Tour Pak. Probably considered over loading the Pak.

I thought very seriously about purchasing another Tour Pac on ebay and painting it to match my paint but then I started thinking.

Has anyone come up with a way to reinforce the hinge side of a Tour Pac? Say a piece of sheet steel that is bolted to the Tour Pak mount and runs from there up to the hinges and bolts there? If the sheet steel was formed in such a way to reinforce the edge where it was bent it would strengthen the entire assembly

I know I will still have to get the fiberglass repaired and probably re paint the box but I don't want this to happen again.

dont overload it and dont use such stuff as to exert pressuse on the hinges. you can also break the rails the tour pak sits on.

I had a latch catch tear through the fiberglass on the tour pack of my old one after years of over stuffing and vibration. Thought I was $crewed until I talked to a body shop guy. I drilled out the rivets, cut to fit a piece of auto sheet metal he gave me and epoxed it to the inside of the pack. I used the latch catch as a template and drilled holes through the expoxed patch after the stuff had set up over night. Replaced the rivets with small nuts and bolts that had the head size the same diameter as the rivets. The repair is stronger than new.

The repair piece fit between the inside rubber gasket and the tour pack cover so it doesn't show. It would be exposed on the hinge side but you could minimize the conspicuosness by painting it flat black to match the pack interior. Total cost not including my labor - about $15.00 American.

Depending on how close the crack is to the hinge, you may not have to mess with the hinge at all. The two part epoxies have incredible strength. Use in a well ventilated area and stay upwind!

...or try your luck at ebay. [sm=goodidea.gif]

You can also get a fiberglass repair kit at any auto parts store and lay it up on the inside to reinforce it.

Thanks guys. I know I have over loaded the lid and that is what caused the problem. You suggestions are good and I will consider them.
