Default Pure Power oil filter yields 7 degree drop in oil temp

Greetings all, from my previous post I was wondering if the addition of a pure power oil filter would have an effect on my oil temp. Initially I was thinking of adding a second oil cooler when someone on this forum (sorry I forgot his name) suggested that I try the pure power oil filter. I did not buy the hype about more horsepower, torque or fuel economy. I was more interested in better oil filtration and possibly a drop in oil temp. These are the results of my findings. I started my 09 Ultra Classic that is running :SYN 3, TTS Master Tuner, stage 1 kit, V&H true duals, and tail gunner slip on pipes. The outside temp was 42 degrees. The oil filter temp was 44 degrees and the oil tank temp was 46 degrees. This gave me a good baseline to measure from I let the bike run for 15 minutes and checked the temp of the HD oil filter with a digital thermometer as well as the oil tank temp. The oil tank temp was 243 degrees. The oil filter surface temp was 249 degrees. I let the bike cool off for 3 hours and checked the temps again. Outside temp was 42 degrees, oil filter temp was 45 degrees, and the oil tank was 46 degrees. I changed to the Pro Power oil filter, and topped off the oil tank with about 4 ounces of oil (the amount I lost when making the filter change). I let the bike run again for 15 minutes on the nose. The oil filter surface temp was now 242 degrees, and the oil tank temp was now 235 degrees. Since I saw a 7 to 8 degree drop in oil temps in two areas. I tried to be consistent with temp measurements, ambient temp and warm up time. The only major variable was the change in the oil filter. I know this is not the most scientific comparison, but the best I could do given the environment and test perameters. If this oil filter gives me a 5 to 8 degree drop in oil temp, I am pleased with the result. Maybe some of you will try the same test with your bikes. I will be curious about what kind of results you find.
Dwayne

Thanks for the info and your scientific approach...which is far more than guessing as most people do on forums...your approach is a method that yielded plausible results...JMO

Was the run time riding or idling?

I'd like to see you do it again when its 90 degrees outside and see if you get similar results. Thanks for the info, good work.

I would imagine that the temp drop when the ambient temp is 90 degrees will be considerably less. If I understand thermodynamics correctly, the drop at 90 degrees 6.02X10X23(2) or 2 Phi-R / 90 sin / Cos3 / =4. Or in simple math 4 degrees. This is under load, plus my body weight, plus road condition, the variables go on and on. But if there is any advantage at all I will take it. Afterall, any reduction in heat is a savings in engine life and performance.
