Default Installed my HD oil cooler

Yesterday, I spent the morning installing the HD oil cooler on my '07 Heritage. I put the cooler & clamps on first, but it didn't go on as easy as I thought, it's kind of a confined space to work in. I wasn't due an oil change yet, so drained the tank oil into a new plastic container to re-use. Then, I removed the filter, and let it drain into my used oil barrel. I cleaned everything up with rags & brake cleaner, and installed the filter adapter & hooked up the hoses. I cleaned the filter up, and spun it onto the adapter, and poured the oil back into the tank. Today was nice & sunny, temps in the mid 60's. I ran 10 miles on the interstate, and about 45 minutes in stop & go traffic. The candy thermometer dipstick never showed over 200, and before under the same conditions, I could always expect about 220-225. The cooler didn't warm to the touch until the temp got to about 185 & above, just like it's supposed to. So, at this point I have to say it works as intended.

I just ordered my second one for my second touring bike. I never had any problems with the first one so I'm sticking with the H-D brand. The only difference this time for me will be the addition of the oil temp gauge where the air temp gauge presently is located.

You're probably right, but I hated to dump all that good synthetic oil & an almost new filter at about 750 miles. It's not even dirty yet. I thought about trying this without draining the tank, but didn't know if there was any kind of check valve in the system, or if it was going to drain out all over the bike and the garage floor, so I decided to drain it, keep it clean & dump it back in. And, if I'd used new oil & filter, and found a leak or problem, I'd be out even more $'s.

Sounds like it is doing it's job. I am holding out for the UltraCool softail model. It has a built in fan. Who knows when it will be ready, but that is my plan.

I also am interested in that model I believe the fan would make a big difference in the stop & go traffic situations.

Tell me you chucked those little black clamps.
Next oil change change those out. theyre cheap and will break and send oil spraying all over the bottom side of your bike.

Oil Bud cooler for me, biggest area of cooling, no wires to splice to run a fan but most expensive too, as it don't need a fan to cool your oil due to the larger surface area. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

I will now. I over tightened the first one, and it stripped. I had a good stainless steel one laying on the bench, so I used it. Now that you mention it being a problem, I will replace the other three... thanks, good advice.

I guess its just me but whenever I change anything its always with new parts.
Fluids and filters included. Superstitious I guess but it would be a nice flush.
I am looking at a cooler also.
Let us know how it works out.
