OK I have to ask. Why are all these people buying tuners at 3 to 4 hundred dollars if we can get away with a $120 part? XIEDs work with air & exhaust mods correct? Mine is stock but later I might go with K&N setup for air. Will these work? No plans for cams or other engine mods. Any advantage between ViED & the FL-XiED-09? Sorry for all the questions new to fuel injected.
XIeds fix will give you mechanically sound running system. Programmers or custom tunes bring out optimum performance and change redline and ignition perameters. Excuse my spelling. Basic explanation, someone else could expand.

Go to tuneyourharley.com lot's of info about these product's. They have a chart that shows how the stock ECM works with closed and open loop. Steve Mullen at niterider.com will be glad to explain the difference and how they work. I have the FL-xied's on mine and my wifes bike. Here's how her spark plugs looks after 15K miles with FL-xied's. She has a full stage1 on her bike with Arlen Ness BS A/C and Fuelmoto Jackpot muffler's.
VIEDS have some adjustability in them, via an adjustment screw and a screwdriver.
XIED's are GREAT as long as you're not planning any major work later on. They are non-adjustable. They can handle intake mods and mufflers from what I understand. Full exhaust and air intake maybe be too much for the XIEDS.

Installed them on my 09 Ultra when I bought it and my bud bought his 09 Ultra the next week. he didn't use them and instead installed a SE air filter and different slip ons. I left my air cleaner and mufflers stock. Before I installed them my bike jsut didn't have any real zip. Was a disappointment and the heat from the rear cylinder was really hot. That changed after the install.
I'd say we have the same power and after running in 5th gear for a few miles one day we pulled over and I took the temperature at the rear cyclinder and the temps were the same. Niether of us complain about terrible temps coming from the rear cylinder . We get the same gas mileage too. He's happy with his set up. I'm happy with mine. If leaving the air in / out system stock, I highly recommend them, if not, may not make any difference.
Head pipes stock and just muffler change, or whole system?
If it's the whole system AND the intake, it MAY work, but I doubt it. If you know someone who would let you borrow theirs to see if it works, then do it, otherwise you have to decide if you want to spent the money on something that may not work. True, if they don't work you could sell them, but you have to find someone who wants them.
Keep in Mind, Steve has the VIED system that is adjsutable.

For the guys running hopped up motors (cams, stroker kits, etc.) I can see them dropping $300-$400 (in some cases $1000+) on tuners to get their mixtures right & wring out every bit of power they can. But for the guys who just add an air cleaner and some slipons, I can't see it. XIED's address lean AFR in closed-loop where it's needed the most, and the stock ECM handles open loop fairly well from what I've read. So with minimal mods, it's hard for me to see the need for a $300-$400 tuner.
I've ridden a few bikes with high-dollar tuners, and honestly I can't tell any difference with felt heat between theirs & mine. Realistically speaking, you're sitting on top of a 1600cc (or larger) gas-fired heater located 6" below your nads- you're gonna feel some heat regardless of what AFR system you have. All we can hope to do is mitigate that heat enough to make the bike enjoyable to ride. For some bikes this can cost as little as a hundred bucks, for others considerably more...
