If you can afford the Garmin Zumo 550, 600 series etc those are the ones that are made for a motorcycle, they are water resistant.
I use a Garmin 755T I purchased it refurbished from TigerDirect.com for 139.00. It has a head phone jack that with an 18inch male to male plug "Stero" I plug into the aux on my radio and all the commands come right through the head phones. Also has an SD card slot to plug in the music 4 GB card so all my tunes are there for that cross country ride It also has lifetime Traffic updates, at no cost! Lane control and 3d buildings, and is viewable in direct sunlight.
Here's a link to Tiger Direct.

Anyhoo that's the one I use, also the mount has a quick release button on the bottom, push it the gps comes off and goes in your pocket or the ol ladies purse.
I had the Tom Tom XL gave it to my brother for his RV, they aren't worth crap in my books, but that's just me.
Hope this helps
Ride Safe, Road Hazards are everywhere
Oh yeah, I bought the motorcycle mount for the Garmin from ebay for 7.00 free shipping.
one other thing, if it rains, I remove it and store it in a water proof bag or wrap it in plastic, no big deal.

I have the Zumo 550 and have had no issues with it. I chose the 550 for it's ability to accept custom maps and becuase it's water proof/resistant.

I scrapped my GPS and use Google Maps on my Droid X

If you use bluetooth headsets you can have the GPS turn by Turn in your ear as you go

Another vote for Garmin! I've got the 660 and while it wasn't cheap, it has worked well. No, it does not lock down but it only takes a minute to remove and throw it in the case, then your saddlebag. Not a biggie to me and I actually prefer it that way. I also bought another mount and it does double duty in my autos also which helps offset the cost factor.

Comparing a GPS to a Map? Not even possible. Two entirely different animals. In an emergency, which would you want?

My preference is the Garman 60CSx. Two AA batteries good for 14/16 hrs easy to mount pop on pop off throw it in my saddle bag. Mapping software for your computer, tracking and map sharing. Great for anything hiking, Boating, Kayaking and of coarse motorcycling. For me this is a do all unit so I'm sure that a motorcycle only would be better for just that.

My son presented me with the 660 early last year. Used it for multiple 3-4 day trips without a hitch. I also have the suction cup mount for the car and use it when I travel for business. Great piece of kit. Highly recommend. Just need to learn how to add trips to it. Technically challenged at times.....

I just replaced my TomTom Rider 1 with a Garmin Zumo. Both have/had pros and cons. TomToms are more Europe-centric and work best there, while Garmin's North America maps seem better here in The States. I have to wear a BT with either one to hear the route instructions. Both are equally readable in the sun. TomTom's routing algorithms seem to be just a tad bit better than the Zumo's. My Zumo takes me some weird backroads route to get from my house in Southwest Orange County to downtown Orlando, but the TomTom would put me right on the Toll Road Expressway. Both had fastest route checked and didn't have the exclude toll roads box checked. Both user interfaces are pretty self-expanatory and easy to use even with gloves. Overall, I find GPS to be a useful tool, especially when exploring the back-roads w/o having to stop and fiddle with a bunch of maps. I use mine to preplan my longer trips using the HD Ride Planner and then upload them to the GPS. YMMV.

Not long ago I got a zumo 660 and it is a great unit as easy to see in direct sunlight, waterproof, shockproof and paid $617.40. It does have an issue and will be sent back to Garmin tomorrow but I understand they are very good about warranty issues. Also their technical support is outstanding should you have any questions. Here is the link should you go that route.

Garmin Zumo 660 works fine and I have the fairing mount. Easy to read.
