I have the fairing mount, love it, very well designed (only $30). I leave the GPS on all the time, because I have my approx mileage per tank input. Plus, I keep it on km/hr, they have been cracking down on speeders here.
Same with me. I have mine on all the time except at stops, and it detaches so quick that there is no issue. I use the gas gauge, have a ton of music on a micro SD card, I have it paired to the cell phone and can use the phone through the Garmin, and I trust the speedometer in it much more than the HD unit.
The fairing mount is very clean with no exposed wires, and comes with a cover for the pins when the unit is off of the bike. When the unit is off, you hardly notice the mount.
