Default Air/Cleaner Question

If most High Flow Air/Cleaners cause Blow By ,With oil getting in the Fliter and on the Motor..

What happens to the Oil using a Stock Air/Cleaner??

An air filter cannot cause blow by, a non-stock air filter may allow the already occuring blow by to not be sucked into the intake due to a non-stock design and then the oil will accumulate on the filter media. The stock design is very epa adhering and most all oil blow by mist is sucked into the engine to be burned or turned into carbon deposits in your engine, nice!

if you use a stock cover, and have a problem ( I do not with the Ness BS) you can put a maxipad in the bottom of the cover- and change it out every once in a while.

blowby is influenced by cam selection & timing, breather timing, RPM, weight/grade of oil, oil fill ( I run my oil 1 pint low on the dipstick) and the condition of the umbrella valves in the heads.

This IS a superior design to the earlier ( pre 93) bikes which breathed from the lower end of the motor- more blow by and it was vented to the street rather than burned. My old Pan, the breather tube runs over inside the primary tins to lube the chain.

I've got the Big Sucker with the stock HD cover on my scooter ( 09 FLHTCU )and have no problems with seepage at all. The venting on the Big Sucker is done through the mounting bolts and it works quite nicely. Of course I haven't been inside the motor yet. I've just done the A/C, pipes and the Stage 1 download for now. Warranty is up in April then we'll do some tweaking! Mkguitar is right about the crankcase venting. The earlier models used the breather gear in the cam case and the "window" provided for the gear to vent through was very small. We would usually open this window up and that would alleviate some, if not all of the blow by problems.

Just clean out your stage 1 AC when it starts to drip or you notice blow-by.

Was getting a little bit of blow by from my SE Stage 1 A/C with K&N filter. Took it off and cleaned up the filter and no problems. Discussed this with a HD tech (I know, I know) and he said basically the same. Remove and clean about every 2K miles or so.

My 07 was doing the same thing, sucking ungodly amounts of oil, thru the A/C. Found 2 things that I think caused what I will call wet sumping.
1. The air filter was filthy and probably having a problem getting enough air, thus sucking more oil than blow by from the heads and
2. It had the wrong oil filter on it and a Fram at that.
I changed the oil filter and air filter and it has been almost a thousand miles and zero problems. I think this goes back to maint, maint, and more maint. There is no substitute for PROPER maint.

is this window reshaped by grinding/filing, or is some special tool needed?

I've had good experience with the 1968 36-28-36 model...every 30 days or so the Maxi Pad supply replenishes itself.
