I was thinking about putting heated grips on my 09 ultra. How difficult is it to install? Or would it be wise to have the dealer install them. Thanks for your input....
Had the HD grips on my old RK Custom for 4 years with no problems. They worked great. When I bough my 2011 SG, the dealer wanted $400 for the install so I decided to do it later myself.
I'm also interested in how hard they would be to install.

I got the Harley heated grips for Christmas and after reading thru the instructions, I had the local Indy install them. After he described what all he had to do -- remove outer fairing (easy), grips, throttle-by-wire, fish wires thru handlebars (not so easy), remove gas tank to run wires, etc. -- I'm glad I asked him to do it. Charged me $110 for the install, but I also had some other work done so I don't know if I got preferred pricing on the grip install or not. Pretty sure the dealership would have charged me more.
Just installed heat demons on my 08 Ultra.
On a scale of 1-10 the install is about a 4.
Not very bad at all, just take your time.
Temp. in the garage was about 30 degs so I would go back into the hose and reread the next step and warm up at the same time.
All in all it was easier then I expected.
A lot easier, less expensive and more reliable option would be to buy Gerbing's gloves. As you live where you do it would then greatly extend your riding season were you to then add the heated boot, pant and jacket liners.
The obvious problem with gloves is that you have to have them with you and therefore planned to use them. If you go in the mountains and or you get rained on it is nice to just flip the switch and have warm hands even in the summer/srping/fall.
Yes the gloves are better but you can't have them ready to go allways like the grips.
I have had heated gloves and heated grips. The heated grips really keep the part of your hand on the grip barely warm. I have gerbing heated gloves and think that is the way to go. The mistake I made was to buy a single thermostat control instead of the dual control for future additions of heated gear. Installing the connection for the heated clothing is about a five minute job.
