07 Ultra and it makes a racket in both 5th and 6th gear...somtimes it sounds like the trans and others times it seems like a ping..owners book says 50mph in 6th, well that is a load of BS...can't ever go under 60 in 6th, fact it really likes to be going in excess of 70 to use that gear..mine actually isn't consistent with the noises, hear it for a while then it seem to go away...soometimes it is louder then the radio....will be putting it in for the 1000 mile service this week then it comes home to a PC, V&H Ovals, and a K&N....will post if it gets better...and just as a side note this is not my first HD...I know HD"s make some noise...have had 4 speed sporty's and a few softails...HD's have never been quiet, but this bagger does seem to have some strange noises coming out of her...
That is what I wanted to hear,Like I said early the noise was coming from motor top end the 1st time mine was dynoed. This may cure many bikes. The reps always wanted to know what gas you were running.Thx for the reply.l

I have a 07 Ultra stock with 500 miles and it doesn't make any racket, other than the 5th gear whine, in 5th or 6th. I use 6th gear around 65
My last post was a little premature... It still pings...just not nearly as bad. Its gotta be a combination of timing and/or leanness. I spoke with a dealer yesterday who claimed its due to the stroker engine and EPA regs. He tried to hold up an arguement but still couldn't get away from admitting that it could run better with more fuel or retarding the timing. To make myself clear...I'm talking strictily about the ping. I'm still working on it.
I have the same problem on my 07 Ultra. Will Power Commander III USB make this go away? I'm completely stock. I've had my bike since 2 July and have 4000 miles. I really like this bike, but pinging bothers me. I have appointment with service department at Shumate Harley here in Spokane, Wa next week to check this problem out.
Update:
Took my bike in for my appointment today. Service dept told me they had just received a ecm update from the factory a couple days ago. No download number to report here, just an update. They test rode my bike for about an hour and reported no pinging. On my way home I tested it in ranges that had previoulsy pinged and all was well. I'll test it real good tomorrow.
I'm going to try a colder sparkplug. I hear the stock map is set to run as if the bike has a 14.3 to 1 compression ratio. That is pretty lean. I don't have the cash to add a power commander, breather and map right now.
I took my bike on a 100 mile ride today and tested all the areas where pinging was noted before. Temp in mid 80's. I had absoultely no pinging. My bike ran really good. I'm a happy camper now.
