Is it a good idea or a bad one to dyno a new bike rite outta the crate. New ultra is in and I'm going to do a stage 1 with kerker slip-ons and vance & hines power duals. Was told that I need the race tuner and a dyno because of the power duals. Which is fine! just wondering if I should ride it stock for a bit before I get it dyno'd. Thanks
You can actually break a bike in better and "more safely" on a dyno if the operator knows what he's doing. They have more control over environmental stuff and are able to monitor what's going on with your bike as it's being broken in.
I took my new bike to Wes at Cycle Rama with 35 miles on it, had him do a dyno break in run, then put new cams , breather , tuner and pipes on it and dyno it, no problem
When I took the York factory tour, as we neared the end of the line, we saw them take each bike and put it on a dyno. I watched the guy on the left push it past 100 mph and then off. The factory guy said that each bike gets checked before leaving the factory, and then some get a test ride also. His comment was if you get a new bike with some miles on it, it was one of the bikes that was pulled to ensure everything is ok.
Point trying to be made, is that the MOCO says to baby it for the first 500 miles, but they don't baby it with 0 miles, but not for very long.
I'd do the stage 1 and dyno after the breakin period. If for no other reason than if there is something "off" with the bike from the start, there is no added complication of the new parts, new tune, etc when it comes to diagnosing a problem. Its bone stock, so if there is a problem, nothing can be blamed on the upgrade. I dunno, just my thought.
Besides...when you finally get it on the dyno after 500 miles or so...you can get a before and after and see what your money bought you.

Thanks for all the info, the guys at my dealer are really good and I could trust them with a dyno 'break in' . But I do like the idea of knowing seat of the pants difference from stock to upgrades . Hmmmm something to ponder!
