I bought the Kingston mini USB iPhone charger on amazon. It fits flush to the inner faring. Then I ran the USB wire up my handlebar and hid the wire in my sunglasse pouch. Works great
I just bought one of those little mini USB cig lighter things at Best Buy and it seems to work. It's nice that it's so small, because it will fit flush (as others pointed out) and not hit the tank.
I connected the GPS cable into it and my Garmin thought it was connected to a PC at first. Then after a minute or so, it started up like normal and I got a signal. So yeah, COOL!
Now I'll buy a $15.00 handlebar mount on eBay and have a full CHEAP setup that will hopefully work well and look just fine!!!
Oh yeah, I was obviously wrong about the cig lighter power remaining on when the bike is off. Thank God I was wrong too, because that would kinda suck.
Sorry, I'm just learning this new bike. (and loving it)
Not sure why but my owners manual says it's for a cigarette lighter only, not any accessory. Probably has something to do with the fuse rating or as you are finding out it will hit the tank.
Probably, but the GPS or cell phone charger will pull less amps than the cigarette lighter heater coil. You have to watch that what you stick in there don't vibrate out but I have charged my IPhone many times. No problems at all.
Thanks for chiming in. I have that little single USB charger thing in the lighter now and it clears everything. But anything bigger than that would probably hit the tank a little.
I assume it's okay to ride around all the time with that little USB charger thing in there even if I'm not using it, right? I know water could get in there, but I doubt it. It's really sucked up there. I could pull it and put the cig lighter back in if I hit rain.
It's pretty hard to get it out, which is why I'm asking. Much easier to just leave it there if it doesn't hurt anything.
All I really need now is some cheap mount for the Garmin GPS I already have. Then I'll try to get the shortest USB power cable I can and run it off that cig lighter.
It would be kinda cool to have it wired to the accessory plug, but that's running wires from the battery to the handlebars (not a huge deal, I guess.)
