If you loosen the inner primary I believe you can get away with out grinding. But then the seals may then be compromised.

Just grind it. I used a dremel and a sanding wheel. Took less than a minute.

Thanks friend. I'm getting ready to do an inner primary swap for a guy next weekend (on an 02 E Glide). So I'll just loosen it up before removing the rotor.

You should not have to grind on the primary. I did a stator replacement and did not grind the primary case. But good write up. But maybe because it was a dyna. But I can't imagine it any different.

09 and up, possibly 08 too and your grinding....no way around it other than loosening or removing the inner primary.

Does anybody know why the rotor must be replaced with the new comp. kit?

On the original rotor the small compensator springs are part of the rotor. On the SE model the springs are much larger and are separate components. Thus the need for a different design rotor. The drive gear is also a different design.

The SE part was the only other option when I went to the dealership to research what was available, part number, prices, etc. The stock part number 40296-06A for $118.49, that was around March of 2011 when I had 45000 miles and a starting issue developed. I chose the SE part, I am not a drag racer and I just don't drive aggressively. I replaced the primary chain at 65000 due to the loud whine that developed. Looking at the wear of about 25 thousandths, I would not go with any weaker part that didn't say drag racing! I now have 96000 on those same parts, bike runs great.

Good luck with you parts search.

Thanks for your input "bshapiro". It looks like the new SE part is the only option now.

Default SE Compensator

Great post Bowa18. I have a 2008 flstn with a chrome inner primary. I performed the grinding method, but the rotor would not come out. I had to loosen the inner primary. I replaced the compensator because an awful noise was coming out from the primary case and fumes were being released from the air cleaner while restarting the engine. It would only happened when the bike had reached its optimum temperature. I thought it was the starter clutch. Upon inspection and test , the starter was fine. The bike runs great now and it restart right up when the engine is hot. Again thanks for a great write up.
