Wink Amazing timing!

Thank you very much for going through the hassle of taking pics and uploading...they are great!
I will have to perform this operation with the next couple weeks as my comp is making the dreadded whirring-whinning noise.

Great write up...

Thanks!!!

I want to thank all members who have posted their advice on my very worrisome primary noise. Once I removed the primary cover, the 1 1/2 inch hex was backed out about three turns. I removed the bolt completely, cleaned the threads, applied red lock-tite and torqued the nut to 150 pounds/sq in. The scarey noises that sounded like the lower end was coming apart were quieted and my nightmares of a shortened riding season and heavy repair bills were quieted as well.

I just replace the stock comp on my 09 Heritage with the SE. It was a little different from the OP's instructions from his touring model.. The piece of wood I used to lock the primary was about an inch longer & the area I had to grind was much larger. I had to grind it right to the lip to get the rotor off as it seems the softail inner primary is different from the touring bikes & need more clearance to slide the rotor out. Don't worry about the first pic as I had to use a rough grinding wheel on my high speed drill to get enough material off as I went through about 20 sanding drum disc with my dremel first & got nowhere. I finished it off with the dremel disc to clean it up. I did clean it completely out with brake cleaner & a compressor to get all the debris out as I tried covering it with towels but the disc keep catching the towels & it was a royal PIA. I put it back together, adjusted the clutch & started it it and the startup bang was gone. Nice & smooth. I did this during Hurricane Sandy so a test ride was out but I did manage a quick trip up & down my driveway & all was fine.

If you look at the pics you will see the bolt hole just to the right of the grinding area had a gouge in it. That was there when I opened it & I assume it was from the chain hitting it from the old compensator chain slap. I'm glad I replaced it.

I agree..I did my 08 softail ... some minor differances .. but still easy enough... I just didnt take many pix of mine.. I did my 09 street glide as well easy & straight forward..
