As always, I know I can count on you guys for help and tech tips. I do have a question, though. I have read the service manual where it talks about checking the primary chain adjustment and the belt drive adjustment. Any particular thing I need to remember while doing that? And did I read it right.....you check the primary through the little rectangular access panel on the left side of the primary case?

and you will see that there is hash marks on the guide underneath to check the tension.

I bought THIS to check the primary and it works great. He mailed it to me within about 3 days. You do check it through that little rectangular access panel. Also a good time to do a clutch adjustment if necessary, that gets done through the derby cover (the big circular one). As for the belt drive, you can get one of THESE

A fluid change was one of the first things I did when I got my bike just so I knew what kind of oil was in it and how long it had been there. It was super easy and went smooth with the manual and a few tips from this site.

i agree with roadtrain i always loosen the filter on all vehicles before starting to drain the oil i learned the hard way on a pick up drained the oil and the filter wouldnt come off even with wrenches the filter actually stared to twist into poured the oil back in started it up and it loosened right up with the vehicle running .. i dont know why this works like that i guess itts just another of lifes little mysteries

Your oil filter should come off without any trouble if you remove it while still hot. This is the first thing I do after I shut the engine off.

Congratulations on the job. And yeah, they do feel tight coming off. I think a vacuum builds up behind them, and that's what contributes to the tightness. Think of it as leak prevention.
