Default First oil change by myself

Well, I finally did it! I got all the stuff I needed and changed my oil and filter myself. It was not that bad. And not as messy as I thought it would be. I did move the voltage regulator out of the way so as to not get oil all over it when the filter came off. I really had to work to get the filter loose. Do they tighten up on their own?? It was sure more than just hand tight. Anyway, I saved myself some money. Next weekend I will check all the other things on the 15000 mile maintenance list. Thanks to all on this site who provided indirect or direct help. Semper Fi.

Congratulations on the job. And yeah, they do feel tight coming off. I think a vacuum builds up behind them, and that's what contributes to the tightness. Think of it as leak prevention.

Your oil filter should come off without any trouble if you remove it while still hot. This is the first thing I do after I shut the engine off.

Good for you. How did you catch the oil coming out of the filter?

Berettag, after I moved the voltage regulator I used an old sheet to kind of drap over the mounting area. I caught all the oil in the sheet thereby keeping it from getting everywhere under the filter. I just hope Mama don't find out about that sheet........................

Just use the soda bottle trick and you won't have to keep wasting Mama's sheets. I don't make any mess.

If you don't feel like buying a wrench, some rubber, hospital type gloves will give a lot better grip to spin that filter off.

I tried that a few times, I still dripped a small amount. And then my dog wanted to chew on the soda bottle half I was using for my oil change. What I used the last two oil changes is half of a file folder, it seems a bit more flexible. For me, that works good and I have not spilled a drop. Sure makes clean-up easier.

As always, I know I can count on you guys for help and tech tips. I do have a question, though. I have read the service manual where it talks about checking the primary chain adjustment and the belt drive adjustment. Any particular thing I need to remember while doing that? And did I read it right.....you check the primary through the little rectangular access panel on the left side of the primary case?
