Default valve clearance noise

My stock engine is quiet, no lifter/valve clearance niose when it is cold. Yet when it is hot it pecks like the lifters are weak, Running it at highway speeds it will quiet down. But putting around town it gets noisy. Can I replace the stock lifters with some better ones and adj. pushrods? any suggestions??? thanks.

Mine is the exact opposite. Noise when cold. No noise when hot.

Feuling brand lifters are highly respected and they also make a very nice oil pump. You can buy these as a package deal or seperately. Adjustable pushrods are a good idea to help quiet what you already have......if they are dead solid perfectly adjusted.

If you run synthetic oil, try a good 4 stroke motorcycle dino oil on your next oil change. See if it resolves your noise. If it does not, you can always switch back. It is an inexpensive test. I have noticed this when I run synthetic as well. If you are in a warm environment (Florida, Texas etc...) straight 50 weight can be good choice as well.

roller lifters are inherently noisey even though they are hydraulic. if you are running adjustable pushrods you can shorten them a turn and possibly they will be quieter (an S&S recommendation).
