Default Another Tour Pak disconnect question.....

I am going to add a quick disconnect rack to my 2008 Ultra. I know I am going to have to deal with the antenna(s). But I was wondering about the wiring for the lights and passenger audio controls??? I called the dealer to see if they have a wiring kit that covers that. He stated that there is a part # for 2009 up and up to 2005, but nothing in between. He seemed to think that there was a plug (or plugs) under the seat you disconnect.
Any help is appreciated.

Go back to the dealer and ask the parts guy to print out the instructions for the Ultra detach kit for '09 and newer models. Bascially, you would do the same except the antenna relocation products included in that kit won't fit on your bike; but, you'll understand how to disconnect the electrical for the tour pak lights, the electrical connectors in the speaker pods, etc.

You can also read the information in the HD Service Manual for your bike that describes how to remove the tour pak and get basically the same information.

The kit for '09 and newer models includes patch cords (or has them as an additional accessory) so that you don't have to remove the tour pak liner to access the electrical/lighting harness and antenna cables to disconnect them; and, brings the electrical and antenna disconnnects outside the TP for ease of access.

dont know if there is already plugs to disconnect the lights, would maybe assume there is but who knows... why not just go to hilo or any auto parts store and buy some electrical inline disconnects? one thing is for sure you will find the advice you need on this forum...did you check in the DIY section??

As Carl started you can raid the parts from the 09 and newer to make everything factory looking. I used the lighting harness quick connect and cables fo the AM/FM ad CB. Then I used some mounting brackets for the AM/FM and CB to mount the disconnects to the frame. These are the same units tha mount the AM/FM from the Street Glide and Roa Glide. I have pictures of what I did if you want. The audio (spackers etc...) have connections all ready in them. I also have part numbers somewhere if you need those.

Steve,

I'll send you an e-mail with these pics along with the parts I used. I just have to dig up the paperwork. In the meantime I figured I would post the pics so everyone can see. As you look at the antennea mounting brackets in these pics you will see that they are bolted directly to the support frame. I have since added a spacer to the bolt to move the bracket out a bit to make it easier to make the cable connections without interference from the detachable mounting bracket. The spacer actually came from the hardware removed from the hard mount for the tour pak. There is a spacer at the forward mounting point near the shock mount that worked perfectly.

The first pic is the light harness. I just took that to a dealer and had them make the splices to install it. I makes the water proof quick connection outside the tour pak for the brake/running lights. The second pic is the connection inside the pak where you install the harness.

The other pics show the antennea brackets. These are factory HD brackets for mounting the antennea to the frame. They are used on the Street Glide and Road Glide. The left is the AM/FM and the right is the CB. I wanted to keep the use of the CB for trips and wanted everything to look stock. I think it worked out well. I post the rest in another post...

In one of these you will see how the antennea is being pushed a bit by the mounting bracket for the tour pak. The spacer eliminated that. Excuses the dust on the bike. I was at my parents in Prince Edward Island Canada when I did this. The road to their house is dirt and the dust covers everything. The bike was a little dusty...

Thhese last are with the tour pak mounted. Real easy job to do. I did it in an afternoon. Real happy with the outcome. Again, I will e-mail you as soon as I find the parts.

The plugs are in the tour pak and speaker pods, so when you take the tp off you have 2 foot of harness to deal with under your seat,

This thread has every thing you want to know about adding disconnects.

Enjoy

The only problems I see with the above article is that you are duplicating connections and adding more chances for issues. The wiring from the speakers aleady has the plugs and stashing the wires is not that much of a problem. I had no problem stuffing the wires under the seat. It makes a lot less work for those that don't have ths skill to make the splices.
