I have been struggling with the Exact same thoughts you are having. I have been considering Carlini Bag Drag handlebars. I would love to see them before buying but they are not very common.
09 Road King here,
I did the Heritage style bars and it didn't quite do the job also, so I added a stock seat off a 2011 Ultra (cheap takeoff - never used - Craigslist) with an ajustable backrest! Between the bars, about 2-3" further back and the seat, about 1 inch lower and 1-2" further forward, it solved the "comfort" issue. I added the adjustable backrest and now it's like sitting in an EZ chair.
The wife and I are both AMAZED at how much smoother the bike rides also! Not a bad side effect for a fire by trial seat purchase.
Did you check out the HD Road King High handlebars, or reduced reach? Not sure if those are two different bars or just different names for the same bar. In any case they might suit your needs, and they are inexpensive
I've had those Road King High Handlebars on three different RKCs. They're (for me at least) a perfect blend of slightly higher height with different pull back. If you try them, make sure you get the right version for your year model!
