I am thinking about having my stock wheels chrome plated? Has any one done this? What company? How much? Were you happy?
Has any one had any experience with the Black Chrome? Not power coat black. It is sort of a smokey gray chrome. Will it hold up as well as normal chrome?
Pretty sure there was a thread on this not too long ago. I believe that somebody, either in the business or knew somebody, said that it wasn't as durable a regular nickle chrome, but was gettin better.
Black Chrome finish is the newest finish available on OEM and Custom Wheels. Being both shiny and reflective the Black Chrome finish is very similar to chrome. The only difference is that with the Black Chrome finish the color of the chrome is in fact a Pearl Black. Black Chrome application is a patented process. Essentially, pure chromium is applied to a surface by physical vapor deposition, in a vacuum metallization chamber and then protected with a liquid clear coat. The result is a very shiny, reflective, durable finish that not only looks great but actually performs to OEM paint specifications, which no other chrome produced to this day can say. Black chrome is resilient against brake dust, road salt, and road grime and requires very little up keep. Soap and water are the only necessary components to keep this finish looking absolutely great.
I've been considering this as well. Here is a company that does black chrome exchange of stock Street Glide wheels: American Revolution, Inc.
I first became aware of them after seeing an auction for a set of Chrome exchange weels for the Street Glide on Ebay. There prices seem reasonable and they seem to keep the items in stock so the turn around is fairly quick.
Here's a pic of the Street Glide wheels in black chrome from their site:
I plan to exchange my front wheel this winter. Since I have the Draggin' Baggers system and I ride with it lowereed for the most part, I'm short. I don't see the need to do the rear wheel as well.
I'm having both of my stock wheels chromed - took them in 11 days ago (but who's counting). I'm fortunate to live only 5 miles from one of the premier chrome platers in the U.S. I also thought about going the black chrome route. I think that it would look great, but I don't think that it would be contrasty enough with my black pearl paint. IMHO it would be too much black. Personally, I love the contrast of black and chrome. I've had black chrome pieces in the past, and they really look sharp. However, my experience is that is was not as durable as regular chrome. Perhaps things have changed since then - I can't say.
