Over the years , with two different Ultras, I ran the gamut of cooling techniques: syn, cooler, true duals, tuner w/ dyno tune and removing the lowers had a greater cooling effect than the others combined. There is just a lot more air across the engine. I believe the HD manual says that the lower vents should be open when temps are above 60 degrees and that may give 25% of the extra air that no lowers will give

There is a 12 mile climb on I-10 in SE AZ and once I ditched the lowers, running 75 on a 95 degree day engine oil temp does not exceed 230.

Added benefit, w/out the lowers your fuel mileage will improve 2-3 mpg.

Lowers are for comfort++++++++++++++, they absolutely do not help with cooling.

I leave mine on year round. Temps in Southern Illinois, W. Kentucky, and Northern Ten. in upper 90's. Running interstate at 80 to 85 mph my temps have never risen over 230 although fuel mileage is at 38 mpg.

I leave mine on all year. I would think they direct the air towards the engine with their shape and position.

Sounding like my original thoughts were probably correct...lowers are mainly for rider comfort from the elements. And like most things, you like em or you don't.

Question,

Do they quiet down the wind buffeting? I'd like just a little less wind noise on my 2008 FLHT and to hear the stereo a little better. I love the way they look, but don't want them if they don't quiet down my ride a little bit. If not, what's the best suggestion for quieting or CALMING the air around me?

Ben

Mine have been on for 11 years and have NEVER been an issue. I don't even think about it.

mine stay all the time too and they are non vented... no problems and lot of protection (bugs in summer, cold in winter and rain all year long)
