Those pics, look just like my 09 did...I heard about the compensator issue, and did the upgrade...I could find nothing wrong with the parts I took off, other than the clank when I hit the starter...The upgrade is worth it in my opinion...much smoother bike...I tend to idle down alot(when not under load), and now between 1500 and 2000 rpm the bike is way smoother, and no more clank on the start....

My bike is in the shop now. Needs a new compensator. Waiting to hear what Harley will pay for. I'm not leaving without the S/E comp. 2010 EGC ...21000 miles. Under warranty. Just heard from my dealer...they will do the upgrade to S/E Comp for price difference...$139.00. Not as good a deal as those who got the S/E for no additional cost...but I'm a happy camper. I was ready to due a primary fluid change and clutch adjustment anyway. And they will use the Redline MTL. NOW I can consider a cam upgrade...probably S/E 255. Yipee!

Im going to run my stock comp through this summer provided it doesn't start to demonstrate failure issues and change it next winter. I can send you a great link to a post from this forum from bowa18. Its a simple step by step.

Please do post the link. I'm sure a lot of people here could use it. In fact, Hint, Hint, it should go in the tech folder if it's comprehensive.

I had "rocks in a can" like you described and it was the inner bearing. As I recall it got louder with the clutch in. Or was it clutch out? I don't remember but the clutch position made a difference.

BBflhrs, you can't tell visually unless it was a catastophic failure of some sort. Either the springs broke, or the spring basket wore through. Also other possibilites.
On our 07's the stock comp is notoriously week (actually up to the 10's) but another issue is the solid mounted rear drive pulley, which has been rubber damped now since 08.
Since you are in there, i'd say spend the bucks and time for the SE Comp. It really will transform your bike. Much smoother, and more refined feeling, and bye bye starter clunk!
IDS is next if you feel the need.

I just had this replaced this week I thought it was the comp. but it was inner bearing and two other bearing and starter. They showed me the bearings that were removed and couldn't belive how bad they were. I rode it home and it is still doing the banging when you crank it hot. I still think the comp. is bad on mine but will have to see the extended warrenty paid for its self this week.
