Ok, so I am new here and I hate to think that this has been asked a 100 times, but I cannot find an anwer to this.
I have a 07 Softail Standard with 13000 miles. I have had it for about 2 months and love the bike. Runs great. I have done all of the fluid changes a couple weeks after I bought the bike. I just wanted to be sure that all fluids were fresh.
The question I have is regarding the primary. I have actually changed the fluids in there twice. I had syn 20w50, but thought it was a little noisy, so I went to redline. It is a little quieter, but my concern is when the bike is warmed up. It seems that the primary gets noisier. At first it sounds like a sewing machine, but then it gets a little louder than that. The bike shifts great and do not have any issues there. I have also noticed that If I really get on the gas coming out of first and second, sometimes I get a pretty high pitch noise??
I just want to know if I am hearing what may be considered normal noises, or should I be concerned here?
Thanks for the replies, but from what I read, the chain has an auto-adjuster. As far as the compensator nut? Where do I find that, inside the primary? so i would have to take the primary case off in order to take a look at that?
Mine sounds like its whirring all the time even with the clutch in fwtw. So I know its primary only but I cant help either one of us just making a comment. Someone on here will help ya though it may be normal for all I know good luck. edit: My bike has about 24k on it btw.
Yes, it does have an auto tensioner. But that doesn't mean it's working correctly. Next time you change your fluid, pull the outer primary cover off. You can re-use the gasket, so don't worry about buying another one. With the cover off you can inspect everything. It will only take about 30 minutes and you'll have some piece of mind afterwards.
Yeah I am thinking mine sounds like its tight so next primary oil change I am pulling the cover and check it.
fwtw I heard a noisy primary on a video on here another thread on noisy primary's in touring bikes and wow if mine sounded like that one I wouldn't be waiting!!! Some guys were saying it was a normal sound but I disagree. my .002
