I'd recommend avoiding Chicago if at all possible. Wife and I are heading up to Gonzee's party in June. Check your maps. There are a couple ways around Chi Town. There are Drury Motels up north too. They have a kickass breakfast and more than a snack for dinner. Be prepared for rain and cold weather. Their summer up there resembles our winter.

Keep a good diary and let me know how it turns out. I'm doing that same thing mid-june as a side trip from Atlanta to Hot Springs for the HOG rally.

Going the opposite way later this summer. Why not take an xtra day or two and ease your way to the big river and do the great river road thru WI and IL you'll get your breakin and some great roads then head home. Skip summerfest hi dollar and a pita. Lots of better festivals. Since you lived here you should know that. Best of luck

Break in period? Really? I always ride it out of the box like I'm gonna ride it forever. Never had any problems.

Skip the Great River road, it's not that great imo. You should run cross country to La Crosse then take Hwy 61 to 14 into Madison, great riding.
You can explore the Amish country around La Crosse too.

be sure to pre arrange a time for them to do the build. i'd highly suggest staying off the superslab and using little two lane highways on the way back after the build. that way you're not forced to be doing 75 or so. you can ride home at a leisurely pace and break in your motor without abusing it. besides, i find that it's great to stop at the little mom & pop diners on the two lane highways.
