I was told to run the drill in reverse by a boat rigger. This is to stop the splitting. I have done this several time on thin stuff and it works. Just takes a little longer. It dont work all the time so I think I may need to be a certain type bit and I have a varity.

When drilling some holes in my fiberglass fairing, the maker strongly suggested working up in drill size and using light pressure. After drilling the initial hole from the inside of my fairing to the outside (the only point of reference for what I needed was a mark on the inside surface), I made the successively larger holes from the outside in so that if there was any any raggedness it would wind up on the unseen side.

Use a wood centerpoint drill bit up to 3/8" and a hole saw over 3/8", start in reverse until you pass the gelcoat then forward to finish the cut, this eliminates "flaking" of the gelcoat. That is how we mount accessories on fiberglass bass boats.
