Default Xied or Ceramic

I preface this question by saying that while mechanically inclined I am not a mechanic and am engine ignorant. In your opinion which would be the better choice for cooling down the exhaust, an Xied or ceramic coating the pipes? I realize the Xied would be the cheaper alternative, but would it be the better choice? Thank in advance for the advice.

They can't work beyond about 50% TP (throttle position), so performance can't be improved beyond that point. They can improve throttle response some as long as you remain in closed-loop mode, but it doesn't take much throttle input to move into open-loop where IED's don't function at all. I'm not putting them down, as they do have a niche in the marketplace, but before buying them a rider should consider their limitations, especially if he wants to perform upgrades beyond only mufflers. IMO they are good for a rider who might want to upgrade mufflers, leave the rest of the bike stock, and realize some improvement in engine cooling at cruise. They will do that as long as you don't go lower than about 14.2:1, which exceeds the physical limitations of the stock NB O2 sensors. Doing so can cause the ECM to throw codes.

The PC works in all ranges for AFR's and ignition advance, and how well depending on the map installed.

If you want to change mufflers but leave the rest of the bike stock, XIED's will provide better cooling at cruise but won't improve performance except throttle response while in closed-loop mode (50% TP or lower). It has a limited scope but is inexpensive compared to real tuners.

The PCV costs about double that of XIED's but is a real tuner that can alter the entire RPM/TP range for both AFR's and ignition timing. When you upgrade hardware (AC, cams, or whatever) you can perform a dyno-tune or otherwise acquire another map for that new configuration. A PCV from Fuel Moto will have an optimized map for your configuration already loaded, so a dyno-tune is usually unnecessary, and upgraded maps are available at no additional cost.

My 2˘.

i used them on my 07 to fight heat issuies that would leed to ping, they did help a little,i would not advise using them with a/c just slip ons. i have since went with a pcv and the difference is night and day,for me the ied only delayed the inevitable heat and ping, and did cut down on the off throttle stumbling.

I have installed them on my 2011 Ultra limited. Have SE Air Filter, CVO mufflers with Full Sac 2" baffles and the Cats still in the head pipe. No decel pop, engines response is better and engine is cooler than stock. They work as advertized. Gas milage is down. If you plan on going to make further mods to your engine as Iclick has mentioned these are not for you. I am happy with this set up for now and may well leave it alone. I also have a PCV to install if I change things around a bit. Doc

I did both. The HD SE recalibration for correct AFV with the Heavy Breather and the XiEDs for the closed loop enhancement. Couldn't be happier. Safe at both ends. Cheap too at ~ $250.
