It's not that I doubt you Egldr05....yours makes the most sense (no mention of compass in the service manual, etc) but what is throwing me is why would it have been connected to the ACC switch instead of wired to Ignition on. The connector allows for either power on ignition or switched power with the Acc switch (4 pin connector under the seat, 2 for power/ground on ignition and 2 for power ground acc). I think there are more then 2 wires going to it now that I have rechecked it...I will tear into it this weekend and see if there is any additional information I can provide.
I'm tellin ya it's for the compass. If you removed the compass you can tear it out.

100% correct! I installed this sensor on my sg and it is most definitly for the p.o.s. compass. The reason it is connected to the aux switch is to toggle the compass direction while setting the compass. I still have the direction's on how to set it, but I use a gps so I no longer depend on it. It wasn't accurate anyway.
Embarrassed but admitting your right...stupid compass sensor......now that I have replaced the compass it would appear that I have a nice set of wires and a connector for the ACC switch....so I guess the compass wasn't totally useless as it gave me a hole to fill and accessory wires to tap into.... thanks for all you help. Anyone want a useless compass....
Sure...here you go. The sensor unit mounts to the rear high side between the fender and saddlebag as seen in my 1st post. There are 4 wires that go to the rear (presumably N S E W) and a small bulb that is of different style then the rest of the gauges. You can have it if you like.

Well, I guess it's more useful than the ambient air temp gauge, but no thanks.
More useful then the air temp gauge....I would say it about as useful as the air temp gauge as it serves to fill a hole in my fairing...I was riding south....directly south...and the compass was jumping from SW to W to E to S to SE....all within 1 mile....it's totally useless...you would be better off with a 2.00 bubble compass from you local auto parts or walmart store...at least those are fairly accurate...
I agree about the usefulness of the compass. Had one on my 2006 CUSE and it would "stick"....then spin around uselessly. Amusing and completely worthless.
